if i'm reading the act correctly, you only need a passport if your state does not issue a driver's license or identification card that is compliant with the standards in the Real ID Act.

am i missing something?

No.

Well you might be missing the hilariousness of some of the posters here as they try and gin up their faux rage about a topic that they appear to know little about.

Nope, that's pretty much it. It does make you wonder how these states over the course of ten years neglected to make the changes necessary. I wonder what these states did with the grant money?

Not really. There are a few places that haven't filed extensions yet but thats about the entirety of the story

Since I live in a compliant state and also carry an "acceptable" 2nd form of ID (military ID card), they're going to have to find another way to get that money out of me. I'm sure they have no shortage of ideas on how to do that. 🙁 😡

They need to make the passport card valid for domestic flight. Some states also have upgraded drivers licenses, which serve the same purpose as the passport card and cost $30 more.

Ironic how some of the same phony liberals that want to hand out licenses to illegals or scream bloody murder if you are asked to have id to vote have no problem with this, especially since it is going to affect the poorer populace disproportionately.

The ACLU is against this not just some right wing conspiracy nuts you phony liberals.

Remember that time when Congress passed a law that tried to create a national database of drivers' information and turn drivers' licenses into national identification cards? And remember how groups from across the political spectrum joined forces to tell Congress, the president, and their state lawmakers that they objected to this law, known as Real ID, calling it an unfunded mandate that trampled on states' rights, decrying its lack of sufficient protections and potential to increase racial discrimination, worrying about its negative impact on the Amish and other religious denominations, fretting that it would create an expansive and cumbersome new bureaucracy or facilitate the tracking of individuals?

Opposition to Real ID united everyone from the National Governors Association to the ACLU to the American Conservative Union, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and National Organization for Women to Gun Owners of America, to name a few.

Was there really grant money involved? That's pretty funny 😀 "We're going to collect money from you in order to hand it right back but call it 'Grant Money' so we can dictate its intent."

Communism, Socialism, Fascism, etc., are all Governments that can't wait to fuck you up. Demand your papers, etc.

Capitalism, is a new form of Government, that respects the individual and individual rights.

I think you forgot a few of the key buzzwords to make this post truly shine. Sad, cause you were almost onto something.

Yeah there was.

What does the REAL ID Act require?

The REAL ID Act of 2005:

  • Establishes minimum standards for the production and issuance of state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and authorizes grants to assist states in implementing the requirements;

I wasn't aware that the government runs our airlines. You know the difference between the government and the private sector right?

Obviously you don't fly as the security check points are run by the TSA (DHS). You have to show an ID before you can pass through the security.

New York, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Hampshire and American Samoa

I don't know why the article is including Wisconsin. Our drivers license is already Real ID compliant since last year. Even the wiki page says so.

First thing I did thanks to my parents.. was get a US Passport. They always said it was more important than my Drivers License. Now I believe it.

I use it quite a lot anyways for overseas travel but you'd have to pay me to fly domestically.

This. Flying used to be fun.

did you just compare voting to flying? lol

A non issue. But I have two valid passports, so I'm good. I think every adult needs to consider having one.

Never pass up an opportunity to blame Libruhls, huh?

The bill was sponsored by a powerful Repub, passed by a Repub Congress & signed by a Repub President. It's a logical extension of their voter fraud routine & of the CDL routine to regular drivers.

Not that I favor it, but there are up sides. States must accept other states' ID as valid when people move rather than demanding birth certs for new ID & voter registration.

Something that should please law & order authoritarians is that States have the information to refuse issuance of new ID on the basis of unpaid fines & failure to appear in other states.

It could be expanded into a system that would actually prevent employment of illegals, as well.

At least it doesn't include mandatory physicals & random drug testing that commercial drivers put up with.

Because they were the ones flying so often anyways right? It's $110. That's a week of food or a week of cigarettes in New York.

Nope, I don't fly a lot and when I did I don't remember showing my ID to the TSA. I'll take your word for it though.

Voting = constitutional right
Flying a plane = flying in a plane

Even if it wasn't mandated I'd bet all the airlines would require an ID to board.

We can't get people to get an ID to vote and now we need to tell them to get an ID to travel?

you are the second genius to compare voting to flying.

seriously?

Not for the same reason the previous poster from what I can tell. I was just thinking that one of the large arguments for no voter-id was that it was simply too burdensome to expect people to get an ID. If i remember, getting my passport was more complicated than getting a state issued ID/DL... and it costs more! Those people in these select states(for now) who weren't able to get an ID before now can't travel(air) without getting an ID.

What is your point of view other than "lol" and "seriously"?

Flying is not a right.
