Product Description:

Experience rear projection on a grand scale. The A2000 SXRD? television brings the picture detail and clarity of SXRD display technology to the masses. Imagine: Full HD 1080p picture quality within a slim, compact design. The Grand WEGA? SXRD? Rear Projection HDTV is also equipped with Sony?s WEGA Engine? system, which minimizes signal distortion to provide you with the best picture , and features enhanced connectivity with dual HDMI (1080p capability) and front component inputs (1080i). Add PC inputs, SRS® TruSurround XT audio enhancement technology and a compliment of other great features and you begin to see why Grand WEGA SXRD Rear Projection TVs are an excellent value. The Big picture has never looked better.

Features List:

SXRD? Panels SXRD technology is the latest display technology developed by the legendary television engineers at Sony to meet and exceed the demands of a High Definition image at its full 1080 line resolution. Digitally transmitted High Definition signals can contain over 2 million individual detail points that need to be displayed accurately and rapidly. SXRD displays those 2 million detail points per SXRD panel accurately since the 3 SXRD panels actually contain enough pixels to fully display a 1080 line picture without interlacing it. SXRD has the speed to create a smooth, film like image. The SXRD panels have a blistering 2.5ms response time (total rise and fall time), which exceeds the demands of even the most rapidly moving High Definition images. And SXRD creates highly accurate, natural colors because the 3-panel design displays all the colors, all the time.

Advanced Iris Advanced Iris is a special Sony function designed to improve brightness and contrast expression especially in darker scenes. It is accessed inside the Picture Menu and offers 2 Auto settings and 5 Manual settings. Auto 1 and Auto 2 are dynamic adjustments that automatically open and close the iris according to the gamma level of the picture on the screen. Auto 1 is best used for viewing video content that has a large variation in brightness from scene to scene. Auto 2 is best for viewing video content that has less variation in brightness from scene to scene. The 5 manual settings (Max, High, Medium, Low, and Min) can be used to adjust the iris opening to allow the best possible picture viewing depending on ambient room lighting conditions. For instance, High works well for viewing in brightly lit rooms. Low is a good setting for viewing in low light conditions.

WEGA Engine? Video Processor Leveraging Sony?s TV heritage and engineering expertise, the latest generation of Sony?s exclusive WEGA Engine? is born. Its fully digital signal-processing path includes video processing functions that are designed to improve overall picture quality. Among the key functions that have been added to the WEGA Engine are:

Green, blue and white color enhancer circuit which selectively adjusts common natural colors like green, white and blue color levels for a more vivid image.

Digital MPEG Noise Reduction Circuit which reduces MPEG artifacts such as "block noise" and "mosquito noise" caused by compression used in digital broadcasts used to maximize bandwidth.

Digital Contrast Enhancer circuit processes every field automatically selecting out details and optimizing contrast for each scene. Adaptive processing improves the low contrast parts of the picture providing crisp and vivid images with high contrast.
The overall result of WEGA Engine has to be seen to be believed.

HDMI? and PC Inputs Designed for maximum versatility, Sony?s Grand WEGA? XBR® line is equipped with a comprehensive range of input interfaces. The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI? technology supports enhanced or High Definition video, together with multi-channel digital audio to provide matchless image and sound reproduction. A D-Sub 15 input also allows connection to your PC, allowing you to use your high resolution Grand WEGA XBR TV as a computer monitor.

If you're in the market for the best 50" non-Plasma HDTV for under $2,500 this is it!!!

I'm kicking myself for buying the Toshiba 50HMX96 a few months ago and not waiting for the new Sony SXRD :(

The specifications on that tv definately makes it sound very very good..

Although I wouldn't kick myself for buying the Toshiba, its a good buy as well. There will always be something better out there right after you buy something, but as long as you like what you have, then your set... I'm loving my Syntax Olevia 37" HVS LCD TV and I bet there is a ton of better ones out there.

You have a point but I bought the Toshiba DLP knowing the new Sony SXRD was around the corner. Of course I didn't know what pricing would be, I was assuming $2800 or so. If I had known it would be on sale for $2249 I would have definitely held off. Fortunately there is very little 1080p content right now and I'm happy with my Toshiba DLP.

It would be foolish of me to sell my Toshiba at a loss and buy this. So congratulations to whoever buys this awesome HDTV.

Thanks RossMAN!!!

You just saved my bro a ton of cash. This new sony SXRD was just released just a couple of weeks ago and it is unheard of for it to be on sale for $550 off MSRP!!! Wow! I highly recommend anyone who is looking at this deal to jump on it while you can...

Yep this is the brand new 2006 Sony SXRD which was recently released.

I'm happy with my DLP but this would so rock in our livingroom. Ugh.

Does this TV really do 1080p? I've read that not all 1080p TVs can actually "do" 1080p on their inputs. This is crucial to me as I'd want to use it with an HTPC.

But then I would whine and groan about my inflated cc bill, so either way it's a lose-lose situation.

We're watching Prison Break in HDTV on the Toshiba DLP right now, looks great. So I'm (sorta) happy with the decision I made.

No. You are not happy at all with the Toshiba. You notice every little problem about it, and it bugs the hell out of you. You can't help think "Sony SXRD , Sony SXRD , Sony SXRD" in your head over and over again as you stare at that bastard Toshiba.

I'm considering a better HDTV. I like the picture on my current. It's a superthin Infocus 50" DLP. Problem is it's not 1080p and I'd like to use it as a monitor too. Also, it's 120lbs no stand 180 with - I want something more portable. How does this LCoS compare to the 1080p Samsung DLP sets?

A buddy of mine has the 50" Sony SXRD that came out just before this one(1080i?) ands its freaking beautiful. If I had my own place Id be all over this at this price (i wanna say he paid about $3k a few months ago for his) but its not going to fit to well in my 10'x8' room.

I have another friend that has a DLP and it looks nice but after a while it gives me a head ache, especially if Im sitting too close...As far as picture quility goes Id say the SXRD is much better.

I believe the 2005 Sony SXRD was also 1080p but suffered from a "green blob" problem. I wonder if the newer 2006 sets are also afflicted with this? It's probably addressed in the AVSForum thread but I don't have the time nor patience to wade through 4,400+ posts ;)

For your 10'x8' room, I'd probably get a 37" LCD or 42" DLP. The Samsung or Toshiba DLP would be my top pick.

Clearance? the A2000 models are brand new. they were justed released. they won't be clearancing them. Sell them cheaper than MSRP but that's about it. You're probably thinking of last years models.

as for the xbr2, in september/october
