Those ghetto MP3 players aren't anything that Apple should fear. The iPod is king of hard drive based MP3 players. Others might have more storage, but the iPod slaps it around in style and great user interface.

Its so funny how smart people think they are because they are against whats "cool." From my experience I would never buy anything than a mini, 4 people in my apartment, 3 different mp3 players. 2 minis, 1 creative zen, 1 rio karma. Now you nerds should brace yourselves for this, but guess which two roomates are constantly rebooting and complaining about their players, have players which are much larger, and can't take their players running, exercising....

LOL

My Rio Karma is always crashing. I always have to keep a thin paperclip with me at all times to reboot it.

The sound quality is nice though. As much as I hate Sony, I would like to see how they handle the megabass function on their MP3 player.

I agree, people who like something because it's fashionable - or because it's not - are at best less-than-intelligent, and at worst tools. I hate the iPod because it relies on advertising to sell, rather than quality, features and value. Its proponents tend to be young and brash as well.

That's quite an emphasis you're placing on UI... As far as looks, I think ipods are butt-ugly, but that's subjective, of course. I don't see how storace is a concern, most players mimic the main 20 & 40gb capacities of the ipods.

Now for a few of the cons... These "ghetto" players, as you call them, generally feature higher sound quality, longer battery life, support for more and more popular file formats, more features, lower price, no risk of losing everything on the unit, both data and music, due to rabid copy protection, and in the case of the iriver & iaudio, fully plug & play compatibility.

In other words, it's UI vs. everything else.

The iPod is the king of sales, yes. I personally feel that research should come into play; it may or may not be a mistake to buy something because everyone else is - imo only research can tell you that. In the case of the iPod, it's a huge mistake.

I was playing with one of these at CompUSA the other day, the interface sucks, its slow to select songs vs. and Ipod or Creative Zen Touch.

If the cost were closer to the $200 range and not $400 they might be able to actually sell some of them though just because if it being sooo tiny for being 20 gigs.

BTW, the 35 hr battery life on the Walkman is deceptive.

That is the battery life for the walkman using 48bit ATRAC. MP3 would be shorter.
