Peter, Paul, and Mary - Leaving on a Jet Plane.

Uhh.... this was the original. While John Denver wrote the song, his recording wasn't released until years later.

He probably hummed it to himself while he was writing. :p

I'm leeeeeeeaving on a DC-10
Don't know if I'll be back again
Oh Lord, I hate to die

But the engines are loose
And wings are worn
The fuselage is already torn
I'm so frightened that I'll fry....

Chantal Kreviazuk's version of the song is best ever.

Lucy In Sky With Diamonds by William Shatner. For that matter anything sung by William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy.

A couple years ago I heard a punk band do a cover of Billy Joel's Big Shot on XM radio. I can't remember the band but it wins hands down.

I dunno, Shatner's "Common People" makes me chuckle.
And Nimoy's Bilbo Baggins song is hilarious.

The Atari's-Boys of summer..

I didn't think it was that bad. I liked their Black Flag reference. Have you heard their cover of Skid Row's 'I Remember You'?

My contribution: Avril Lavigne's cover of SOAD's 'Chop Suey'. Will post on request.

Winner.

It wasn't requested, but I'll post it anyway:

Good god, that sounds like a bunch of chipmunks in a potato sack with a badger after it was thrown in a river with major rapids. What a skank.

Johnny Cash - Hurt

As much as I like NIN, Johnny Cash all but stole that song from them, he did it much better, and it now sounds like Trent is the one with a crappy cover.

I have had people tell me that "NIN's cover of Hurt sucks" before.

Springsteen's originals had a beautiful, loose, jazzy feel to them that Manfred Mann lost. His remakes weren't bad, just overproduced and kind of heartless.

Back OT, has anyone else here ever heard Old Blue Eyes' cover of I Love Rock 'n' Roll? Of course, Sid Vicious paid him back with a brilliant remake of My Way.

HAHAHA! That was a brilliant mental image (and apt description).

Back on topic, I was pretty disappointed with Chris Cornell's cover of Billie Jean. It wasn't horrible; but, it also wasn't anything like I was expecting. That whole last album was a pretty big deviation from his normal repertoire. Still good, but not as enthralling as Euphoria Morning, IMO.

Fred D. ain't got nuthin on Chuck D.
And Staind just has absolutely no energy to add to the music.

I heard this on the radio coming home today. Scott Ian must have died a little inside.

The original version to wash the Durst out of your ears :p

Good lord, how freaking terrible.

I loved the original so much!

Worst IMO

Madonna - American Pie (hate the original but this is even worse)
Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child O Mine (I mean really, wtf was she thinking...really)
Someone did a cover of Under the Bridge by RHCP and just butchered it, can't remember who.

Best IMO

Faith no More - Easy
Cake - I will survive
Postal Service - Such Great Heights
Sonic youth - Superstar
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground
Nirvana - Man Who sold the World
Johnny Cash - Hurt

KT

i think the postal service wrote and recorded the orginal of Such Great Heights and Iron and Wine did the cover of it and was featured on the sound track to Garden State.

Yeah, someone pointed that out already. I didn't realise.

I've been listening to some of their other stuff from the self-titled album. It's not horrible.

I thought his cover sucked balls. He was practically on his deathbed and yet he still didn't seem to show any of the emotion of the original. Maybe I'm biased being a huge NIN fan, but I think it blew ass.

While I agree that the Johnny Cash cover is good, even though many do not realize there are 2 versions of that song, not counting live. Anyone who does not realize that the only Johnny Cash that is played on the radio is his cover work is just a moron.
