We have some neighbors that are, apparently, "Keeping up with the Joneses", as it's put.....us being the Joneses.

We did pretty well at the end of the year on some stock transactions and cashed out just after Jan. 1st. Had some needs and wants, so we kept the profits and reinvested the principle.

Bought, over a couple of weeks, a new washer and dryer to replace a 12 year old pair that were just flat wearing out.....pump on washer wouldn't quite empty itself completely, and the dryer just took longer and longer to dry stuff.

So we went energy efficient and bought a front-loader washer and dryer and got one heck of a deal from BrandMart on the pair.....like $100 off the washer and $65 off the dryer.

New couch.....found a very nice one in the clearance section at Haverty's for almost half price...perfect in every way. Replaced a sofa that was about 10 years old and is now outside in our outdoor shelter thing.

"New" tractor/mower. Was at an estate auction...had a Husqvarna 24hp, 48" cut tractor mower with only 54 hours on it. Looks like brand new. (Estate was husband died, wife over 70 and was giving/selling house and moving in with one set of kids. So getting rid of most all her/their stuff that wasn't needed.)

Mower works perfectly, cuts great, and got it for a song....well, not quite a song, but its new retail cost is around $1800 and we paid, even after buyer's premium, well under $700.

Cut to last weekend.......truck pulls up in front of house across street. From Rent-A-Center. They unload a couch that is almost a spitting image of ours.

Next, they unload a washer and dryer......front-loaders just like ours.

I mention to my SO that it looks like they're trying to keep up with us.....too funny! He says...naaaa, couldn't be. Otherwise, where's the mower?

Yesterday, a truck pulls up towing a mower on a trailer, unloads it and drives off. Unfortunately for them, they got a Troybuilt.....a mower made by MTD....very cheap built unit.

Damn! Why do people feel it's necessary to match what others do/buy/own? Of course, I neglected to mention I bought a 2002 Blazer, new......has been the poster child for reliability. Never a moment's problem. Last year......you guessed it. Across the street, a carbon copy Blazer shows up, only in black instead of silver. (Guess they couldn't afford new and bought 4 years used.)

maybe they are "into" buying the same suburban cr*p that you are into? Just go over and congratulate them on joining the "collective"; I'm sure the 3.5 children is just waiting in the wing.

This reeks of "desperate house wifes" sort of drama. Maybe joining a club or starting a hobby will make life more interesting.

Don't worry, they'll be moving out sooner or later... :)

My parents seems to be in the mindset where they want to keep up with the home decorating shows. They walked through my house Sunday and were talking about all the things I should do. (we're talking about $20k in renovations...)

Edit:
They're thinking "raise the value of the house", I'm thinking "I got 20+ years until I sell it."

You seem awfully snooty about the whole situation. You're doing the same thing they are; you're staring out the window and evaluating what they own, trying to make yourself feel better by saying what you bought is better. You're both trying to keep up with each other.

I can't think of a single time I've ever cared about what my neighbor bought.

Are you saying your 2002 "new" Blazer are better than their 2003/2004 "used" Blazer?

Since you choose to go into details about the mower, make & model of the dryers/washers & couch you got and what they got, plz :p

When we first moved into this neighborhood my wife and i purchased food. Guess what? I looked out the window the next day and other people were unloading groceries. Damn it feels good to be a trend setter.

What is it about us that forces us to get mad when people copy us and get the same things? Shouldnt imitation be flattery? Just a strange thing.

Also, you should be aware that you are on the same level as them. Even though you dont flat out say that you are better than them you hint at it in a lot of places (being passive aggressive) i.e. they got a cheap lawnmower while ours was expensive but half price; we got our couch at 50% off then assuming they paid full price etc

A couch, a washer, a dryer, and a lawnmower are "suburban crap?"

I'm so proud of you, gingerstewart55. You're so totally cool and the envy of the neighborhood. I hope I can be just like you some day! Ya know, minus the condescending attitude.

Hip modern city type folk dont have washer and dryers, they send the stuff to the cleaners, no lawn=no lawnmower. Couches are teh suck wherever you live.
