Sometimes it's not good to do what the Bible says!

you should never do what the bible says, it is always wrong, religion was made up by people who needed something to hide behind because they can't take the truth of the matter.
-Zoson

Zoson - actually people made up religions to explain where they came from. That's why you can find creation stories in every culture around the world. People also needed to explain phenomena that they couldn't explain. So they made up gods and spirits.

As for the guy - I think he saved us the task of chemically castrating himself 😉
Now if only he would have finished the job....

The guy misinterpreted the purpose of the Bible. It's not about 'physical' emasculation.

Well! For HIM it seems to have worked rather well!😀

ZosonYou must be a rapists or?😉 What are YOU hiding?🙁

The Lord Works In Mysterious Ways....😎

There are words in the Bible that say, "Judas hung himself" and "thou shall go and do likewise".

Wonder what will happen when he sees those words?

😉

That may be so, but it also did not say that Judas, himself, was hung.

To do likewise is that all should not be hung.

My point, again, is made. 🙂

There were many in the early church who took some passages from Matthew literally, including Origen, who wrote nearly 6,000 volumes of interpretation... It is widely held that he castrated himself in accordance with (MT 5:30, MT 18:8 and MK 9:43).

The concept of becomeing a eunich to be closer to a diety was common among pagan religions and early Christianty.

This practice was outlawed by the church in 318 CE , see here

1. if everyone has been following the religion threads, you can see mrPalco is a lonney (he wants to US to become a "belevoent theocracy" for Darwain's sake) so ignore him

2. LOL ROLFLAMO Ahahahahahahhahahah 😀 😀 😀 😀

that was the funniest thing all day!

shiz, i'm hindu and even i've read alot of the bible... i don't really practice any religion right now but i think its important for u to atleast read the scriptures, there are some valuable lessons that can be learnt...

what i'm trying to say is that u don't really know if u don't believe in god unless u atleast look at the other view...

<< The guy misinterpreted the purpose of the Bible. It's not about 'physical' emasculation. >>

Prove it.

DRGrim, are you ready to take up the opposing argument then that it *is* about physical emasculation? Or are you just trying to stir up some trouble, because all the biblical scholars in the world can't necessarily prove an interpretation of the scripture. So that if it is undeniable proof in interpretation you are looking for you will never find it, because it does not exist.

<<Prove it.>>

That's an easy one, DRGrimm.

The verses quoted from are at Matthew 5:29-30. They are part of Jesus' famous "Sermon on the Mount" (of Olives) to a rather large crowd of Jews.

Reading further in Matthew 13:34, we learn that "All these these things Jesus spoke to the crowds by illustrations (or parables). Indeed without an illustration he would not speak to them;"

We have to remember, Jesus was speaking to fellow Jews. Jews - according to their Law of which Jesus was under - were even forbidden to mutilate their own flesh (Leviticus 19:28).

What Jesus was talking about was symbolic (how could your right hand or or your eye make you literally "stumble"?) showing by the importance of not letting ANYTHING interefere with one's spiritual goals.

Also, read the context; just before Jesus talks about the "eye" making one stumble, he is speaking of one that "keeps on looking at a woman so as to have a passion for her." He didn't recommend tearing both eyes out (because you could keep looking with the other eye).

It's clearly figurative language of an illustration.

EDIT: The Bible NEVER encouraged ANYONE to be eunichs. In fact the Jews did not allow castrated males (testicles or penis removed) to enter the congregation. The early Christians never forbade marrage among any of their congregation.

Capn: I'm just trying to stir up some trouble, yes.

<< how could your right hand or or your eye make you literally "stumble"? >>

Well, if you needed glasses, and you didn't have them, then your eye could very easilly make you stumble.

<< im an atheist so i never even looked in the bible >>

Any self-proclaimed atheist should have to study religious texts before declaring that they know there is no god, IMHO. Agnostics, on the other hand - maybe you have your terms crossed?

I quote, from someone famous (I think it was Carl Sagan, but I can't be that sure): I'm not an atheist. I don't profess to know that much.

Rob

Well, DRGrim, it not your eye that's making you stumble, rather your lack of eyeglasses.

And how does your "right hand" make you stumble? Probably better to learn to walk right rather than cut your hand off and the stump make you stumble anyway.

EDIT: Come up with a hard question. That was too easy.

BTW, for a troublemaker you actually read my post?! :Q
