Like an 8-year-old couldn't drown in a 5' pool?

That's what I was thinking.

I wouldn't doubt that it would reduce drownings at least a little though. If the kid starts having problems, and he's in the (Oh noes!) deep end, he could panic and make the situation worse...
Yeah, a 4' kid will be so much better off in 5' of water vs 10', right?

Did you even read what I said? Apparently not. Look, I agree that this is lame. I was just throwing ideas out there.

Please read, and think about my comment again.

I did. I keep coming away from it with the idea that you think deep ends are more dangerous than 5" shallow ends. Is it a mistake in the inference, or implication? I dunno.

Sorry if that's not what you meant.

Public pools are teh suck. They're too warm from the yellow river. And they take nasty!! That's why I use my friend's pool a block away from me. It's COLD and doesn't taste nasty.

Nope, I just meant that if the kid is swimmng in the deep end, vs. the shallow end.. if he starts to have problems, and is in the deep end.. it could be logical to assume that he would be more likely to panic, since he knows he couldn't touch the bottom.. thereby making the situation worse.

That very well may not be the case though, it was just a rather specific scenario.. not a generalization.

Word to the wise, beat your kid's ass and do it well. My kid will unfortunately grow up to be a bully in a pacifist, French inspired society. When personal risk is removed from people, society suffers. I doubt anyone came out and created legislation against the Wright Brothers attempting to fly because it might injure them. This is complete and utter bull$hit if I ever heard it.

Amazing. I swam countless hours in a pool (private swim club, not public, because that pool was literally right next to our house while the public one was 15 minutes away) with a 10 ft deep end and two diving boards. I don't ever recall injuring myself while using the diving boards and certainly never suffered any injuries diving to the bottom of the "deep end". They actually had it set so that the deep end/diving area was "attached" to the rectangular main area in sort of an "L" shape. Worked quite well and didn't make half the pool "unusable". I can't stand that all pools these days are 3-5' and have signs posted everywhere -- "No diving". Screw you, I can dive in two feet of water with less chance of injuring myself than hopping into a pool feet first when I can jam an ankle or a toe.

The truly funny part is what's going to happen to those coddled kids when they visit the ocean or a lake and realize that the bottom is not always 5' below them? Hell, I think one of the reasons I love scuba diving so much is that I used to dive down in the deep end as a kid. Kids won't know there's water depth below 5' and would probably freak out to know that you can dive down quite easily to 70' like I did on Sunday.

Come to think of it, waves are dangerous to kids because they can throw you into coral or drag you across the sand (or worse yet, the coral -- ouch). I think we should make all oceans off limits and put some money into researching how to shut off coastal wave action. Pretty soon kids will be "swimming" in pools that have glass covered tops, and they can just "imagine" what being in the water is like.

If these parents are so concerned about their kids drowning, WTF aren't they watching them swim or giving them swim lessons to assure that they can handle anything that happens in a pool?

Agreed.

My 9 year old boy is over 5' about 110lbs but as soft as my 4 year old daughter. The boy will come home cyying and complaining about some short, scrawny 8 year old hitting him. "Boy, quit your whining and knock 'em in the nose once. That will end your problem." \

He does though enjoy jumping off the diving board into the deep end.

hmmm..., this post didn't make much sense. I think it's time to go to bed.

And there is world peace, and we are all one big happy family with butterflies and bees all around us and nothing will harm us.

Well, I'd like to experience my life, not be guarded from it.
This is another attempt to relieve responsibility from the parent. The kid goes off to the deep end, and no one's watching him. Lets no blame the parents...its the pool's fault!

Maybe they are retainers? Braces are glued onto the teeth using a cement-like adhesive. His teeth should of came out with them.

That's lame. YOu're right the pussification of America is being taken way too far. I played with fireworks, jumped off diving boards, rode a bike without a helmet, etc, and I'm FINE.

Kids in the future are going to be stuck inside al lthe time, forced to wear padded clothing whenever they leave the house, and compete in video game tournaments in which they are forced to use wireless controllers, as they may strangle themselves if they have cords.

It's going to be the freaking Matrix, only without the cool brain stimulating computers. "Have fun in your padded, fluid filled bubble, kids!"

Yep. I quote Carlin: "Kids have to wear a helmet for everything these days except jerking off!"
Heh heh, you know I had to pause for a moment to comtemplate if it was really plausible that little Calvin fellow of Calvin and Hobbes would've really said something like that :) Then I realized you'd actually typed Carlin.

I think fat people DO float easier.

Look at the "What's the best way to measure body fat percentage?" part.

First time I use AskJeeves :)

Askjeeves is pretty cool, if you can find the results amongst the sponsorship links and ads :disgust:

Having been through more trouble than I ever care to list out, I'd rather live in a world that was too safe instead of too dangerous.
