Why don't you cancel your internet and sell your PC to pay your food bills, instead of stealing tax dollars from the rest of us?

That is terrible advice. Maybe she needs the computer to search for a job? Maybe she uses the computer to communicate with family, instead of a costly cell phone or land line phone bill. Maybe she uses a computer at work or at a library.

Any of those answers would be simple and acceptable if applicable. But the venom and anger in GG's reply leads me to believe that the question struck a nerve and that those answers are not applicable. I'm in the grocery biz and the number of people using food stamps for staples while driving new cars, wearing expensive clothes and jewelry and buying luxuries like filet mignon and lobster would make your head spin.

well, thats a GREAT reason to assume that an unknown person on the internet is scum and treat her as such. I guess people should just assume your mother is a whore, because there are plenty of mothers out the who are....

It was a valid question and anyone with a valid answer would not hesitate to answer. The people who object violently to questions are the people that don't have valid answers. Roll your eyes all you want, if you really think that's helping your tenuous point more is the pity.

it wasn't a valid question, it was a snide and venemous remark by someone who is jaded and angry and directing it at the OP for no good reason.

the OP possibly replied that way as a result of the derision and ridicule that people often direct towards those on foodstamps. many people who really need them will not use them because of that, and they and their families suffer because of it.

maybe she bought the computer years ago when she had money. Should she really sell it if it's worth next to nothing?

Maybe she uses a cheap dial up account?

Pseudo-capitalist elitist prick.

you think my analogy was an attack?

and I did call Capitalizt a pseudo-capitalist elitist prick for his comment. It was in response to his unprovoked attack. He attacked her unprovoked.

I guess in your world if I punch a guy for hitting his girlfriend I'm just as wrong as he was for hitting her?

Possibly. However, social derision and ridicule haven't prevented the OP from using foodstamps. Although other posters may not have stated it very well, the OP is a.) using a government-provided benefit for necessities, which b.) come from taxes paid by all of us on the forum, while at the same time c.) posting from a computer, which isn't exactly a necessity.

Now granted, the OP may be using a community college computer or a library one, but racking up 381 posts in just two months suggests that she's online quite a bit. Is it crazy to suggest that the OP use some of this spare time to get a job and get off the dole?

if the OP worked, they paid into the system and have a right to use it, some of those "tax dollars" a lot of you are complaining about came from the OP. Nice to see asshats on here acting like the usual asshats. The OP is obviously living off your tax dollars while they surf the internet on their $10,000 liquid cooled Alienware PC. DAMN YOU OP!

funny how they got the ban stick, but the fucker who trolled them didn't get shit.
if i get banned for pointing out the obvious, cool beans....

and if she's disabled or otherwise unable to work?

as I said, perhaps her computer is old and outdated and essentially worthless. Perhaps she has access to free wifi, or low cost dial-up. I guarantee you most of you would gladly scrimp together $10 a month for internet access even if you were poor.

we don't know any of the answers to these questions, but yet you treat her like a criminal.

Take 3 days to resconsider your responses to your fellow posters.

That's a fair question. When you get back from vacation try answering it.

Seconded.

I hate people who leech off the rest of us, and then when they use the excuse of being "poor" they have all these luxuries people of their income shouldn't have, if they're trying to use the government (aka tax payers) to help them out.

The government should be your last resort, not your crutch.

Mikey:

If she's disabled or unable to work--that's a legitimate concern. Now granted, I'm guessing here, but the OP doesn't sound like she has any trouble getting around--she goes to WalMart, she can call people on the phone, she can go back to WalMart. It certainly sounds like she could be a courier or work at a call center.

If she has access to free wifi, that's one thing. But if you're getting money from the government to pay for necessities, you shouldn't be spending money on luxuries. Is that a horrible attitude for me to take? Possibly. But I don't think it's too much to ask people to be able to pay their way before we subsidize their home-internet access. If you really need the 'net then you can go to the library or the community college, as others (including you) have suggested.

and WHERE does it indicate that she pays for internet? noone here knows that she doesn't get it paid for by a relative, or have free wifi or dial-up.

That's the point, you all are judging here and some are treating her like trash for no reason. Now, if you have proof that she is abusing the system, by all means get on her case, but no one here knows that.

Innocent until proven guilty, or something along those lines, right? Isn't that what we are supposed to value as a society?

I don't particularly care, people just should re-evaluate how they treat others. You can be a dick all you want, hell I am a lot of the time, but don't deny it.

That's why I'm trying not to say that she's a bad person or anything like that. Only that right now, the evidence suggests that she might not be using her money in the most appropriate way.

As for innocent until proven guilty, that's typically a concept that we reserve for criminal trials, and the serious punishments that come with them. For everyday situations, we have to rely on experience and heuristic shortcuts (while realizing that there are exceptions in the world.)

Granted, the way that some posters replied to the OP was discourteous, but, if the OP was an exception, an appropriate reply would be something along the lines of "I'm disabled, can't work, and my relatives pay for my internet" -- not a profanity laced reply.
