When I lost my job a few years ago I sold what I needed to (my computer, etc), cancelled my cable, internet, etc to pay for what needed to be done until I got another job.
Maybe there's more to it here, but maybe not.

Hahahah this is EXACTLY why i steer clear of walmart for just about everything (Except oil for my car/bike/pwc). Nothing like getting stuck behind someone arguing about foodstamps...

Or maybe you can just live with the purchases on your credit card and use the food stamps next time ? Or buy shit to put into freezer?

Where does it say she's trying to return food

Conceptually, I don't know what the problem would be with her showing up with the receipt and the food stamp thing, charging the food stamp account, and then refunding her visa.

Of course, I also would be surprised if WalMart doesn't want to bother. There may be other technicalities involved as well.

It's still returning food, albeit briefly.

he does have a bit of a point...

i'm willing to play devils advocate. considering we do not know her situation fully.

But i know a few that leech internet/cable off others. they just run the cables/etc over to the house.

my SIL is on welfare/foodstamps. but has cable tv and internet this way. she splits the cable modem bill with the guy next door and has a Cable box for TV.

but yes asking that was my first thought. but i'm trying to be nice to people for a change.

Actually, I see your point... as far as the computer's concerned, there's no difference. Though I'd still be surprised if it was actually impossible to return any food items there.

Wal-Mart accepts food back, but they have to throw it away right afterward. This includes canned goods, boxed goods, produce, any food item.

I suspect that Costco, Kroger, and all other grocery stores are the same way.

I know I wouldn't want food thats been taken out of the store, and then brought back in.

I work at a supermarket, and yes this could be done, and we would even do it. However, you have to take into consideration that these are Wal-Mart employees and didn't want to go through the hassle. And yes, it would be a pretty big hassle, especially considering you are not even paying for the food. Don't get me wrong, my mom was on food stamps and there are lots of good people on it. However, as a cashier, nothing pisses me off more than people that get all huffy about food they are not really paying for.

Another sad thing is that the state I am in (New Mexico) also gives cash benefits to some people on their EBT card, which most spend on booze.

BTW, it might be store policy because once they charge that Visa, those merchant fees are gone forever, and I could see how those might add up for a big corporation like Wal-Mart who is already running a very thin profitability line.

You might not want to shop at Kroger then. When I worked there, we would put non-damaged returns back on the shelf. Damaged goods would not be thrown away, but sent back for a credit.

If I were the employee (or the manager) I would've allowed it if you agreed to pay for the items using your food stamp card BEFORE refunding the money to your visa

You have no idea what her situation is. She could be posting from a library or community college. She could be using a $100 e-Machine, and on a $20 per month internet plan... yeah, that'll pay for groceries.

Accusing her of "stealing tax dollars from the rest of us", is unwarranted and rude. When she responds accordingly, she gets banned.

The mods here are fucked, and you're a dick.

Have a nice day.

Enjoy your 3 days off as well.

That is terrible advice. Maybe she needs the computer to search for a job? Maybe she uses the computer to communicate with family, instead of a costly cell phone or land line phone bill. Maybe she uses a computer at work or at a library.

maybe she bought the computer years ago when she had money. Should she really sell it if it's worth next to nothing?

Maybe she uses a cheap dial up account?

Pseudo-capitalist elitist prick.

anyways, i go home and check my balance, everythings fine, i have enough funds to pay for what i bought. so i call up the walmart and ask the girl if i can bring in my receipt, have them refund the items i bought onto my visa and pay with the foodstamps card because the funds are there. she seems nice enough and says that she would be able to do this but needed the merchandise...

so i said, well, i have the receipt and i know what i want/bought, can i just round up the necessary items and just scan those because they are exactly the same? she says sure that sounds like something i can do.

ok, so i go in tonight (mind you this walmart isnt my typical one. its far from my home but close to my daughters fathers)... and i tell the lady at the counter what i wish to do etc and she simply says no i cant do that... so im like WHY... i dont want anything different or for free, i just want to be able to pay for my groceries how i can afford them. i dont see the difference in my bringing everything from home, risking it going bad, just to scan the barcodes of the exact same items in the store so that i can pay for them differently... im not taking anything from you, i just need to pay differently

she says she cant without telling me WHY which is pissing me off because if you cant do something, a "because its store policy" does not suffice to me. AT ALL. so i find a manager and he tells me this very same bullshit and all i want to fucking know is WHY cant this be done... why is it so fucking difficult and what is walmart losing by making me a satisfied customer?

someone, if you know, please fucking explain this to me

sorry to hear about your situation, but it is what it is, you say you have a job as a photographer, so you can pay the bill correct?

sure it will be a hardship for you....well welcome to the real world....paying credit card bills can be a hardship for anyone, you are really not that special, accept it move on and learn a lesson from this incident.

This analogy makes no sense.
We all pay taxes.
We all use the roads.
We don't all use food stamps.

As a cost, assuming the average human being...
$Roads + $Foodstamps > $Roads

it's not difficult. She can only use the foodstamps on certain food items. This will require her to pay hard cash for groceries instead of using the foodstamps. Because of this, she may have no money for utilities or gas.

Comparing her credit card situation to the average american who is paying off debt for buying Starbucks, DVDs, and vacations is a bit silly.

Any of those answers would be simple and acceptable if applicable. But the venom and anger in GG's reply leads me to believe that the question struck a nerve and that those answers are not applicable. I'm in the grocery biz and the number of people using food stamps for staples while driving new cars, wearing expensive clothes and jewelry and buying luxuries like filet mignon and lobster would make your head spin.

There may be other technicalities involved as well.

Conceptually, I don't know why we just can't all get along. ;)

However, I suspect that one of those pesky "other technicalities" comes into play here.

For fraud prevention reasons, a teller may well have to swipe each returned item's bar code in order to process its return -- otherwise, the fraud possibilities are immediate, obvious and endless, no?

Anyway, OP, you effed up from the get-go, including shopping at Wally World and then expecting extraordinary customer service after the fact right through coming to ATOT to whine about your food stamp fate.

You kinda' lose on all levels here, you know?

well, thats a GREAT reason to assume that an unknown person on the internet is scum and treat her as such. I guess people should just assume your mother is a whore, because there are plenty of mothers out the who are....

My brother worked as a cashier in a supermarket for a while, they had a big headache that they had to go through any time anyone used food stamps for purchases.

They shouldn't have to do anything different....well, at least not in Colorado. I take my BIL to the supermarket for his grocery shopping and he pays with foodstamps. It works exactly like a debit card.

What does happen every now and then, though, is the company that maintains the system fucks up the balance due to delays or processing. So when the user is expecting money at the first of the month, it's not showing up in the system.

ALSO, one cannot purchase non-food items with the card either. That's definitely where the transaction gets all fucked up if the person doesn't have the sense to separate it before checkout.

I think he is talking about WIC.
