ok so the other day i was food shopping at walmart. it was time to check out and for some reason my foodstamps card was showing zero balance. the line was long and i was in a hurry so i paid with my visa. (i really cant afford to be paying with my visa but we need the food)

anyways, i go home and check my balance, everythings fine, i have enough funds to pay for what i bought. so i call up the walmart and ask the girl if i can bring in my receipt, have them refund the items i bought onto my visa and pay with the foodstamps card because the funds are there. she seems nice enough and says that she would be able to do this but needed the merchandise...

so i said, well, i have the receipt and i know what i want/bought, can i just round up the necessary items and just scan those because they are exactly the same? she says sure that sounds like something i can do.

ok, so i go in tonight (mind you this walmart isnt my typical one. its far from my home but close to my daughters fathers)... and i tell the lady at the counter what i wish to do etc and she simply says no i cant do that... so im like WHY... i dont want anything different or for free, i just want to be able to pay for my groceries how i can afford them. i dont see the difference in my bringing everything from home, risking it going bad, just to scan the barcodes of the exact same items in the store so that i can pay for them differently... im not taking anything from you, i just need to pay differently

she says she cant without telling me WHY which is pissing me off because if you cant do something, a "because its store policy" does not suffice to me. AT ALL. so i find a manager and he tells me this very same bullshit and all i want to fucking know is WHY cant this be done... why is it so fucking difficult and what is walmart losing by making me a satisfied customer?

someone, if you know, please fucking explain this to me

Are you serious? Food isn't returnable, unless it's expired, bad, or something to that extent. For all they know, after they refund your visa, you can just say, "You know what? Nevermind!" and take off. Plan better in the future.

Because you're shopping at wal-mart. Get an Costco membership, you can return food at Costco.

Yeah...if you rounded up all the food and brought it back in, that might be one thing. But I wouldn't let you do that either if I were a manager.

But yeah, it may be store policy to not accept returns of perishable food items. The Manager and employee would probably have their asses handed to them if the store got audited by corporate.

I can confirm that Costco does NOT accept foodstamp cards.

no shock. why should they trust you to pay for it after you get it back on the card?

It may have something to do with how they have to ring items up when purchased with food stamps.
My brother worked as a cashier in a supermarket for a while, they had a big headache that they had to go through any time anyone used food stamps for purchases.

They shouldn't have to do anything different....well, at least not in Colorado. I take my BIL to the supermarket for his grocery shopping and he pays with foodstamps. It works exactly like a debit card.

What does happen every now and then, though, is the company that maintains the system fucks up the balance due to delays or processing. So when the user is expecting money at the first of the month, it's not showing up in the system.

ALSO, one cannot purchase non-food items with the card either. That's definitely where the transaction gets all fucked up if the person doesn't have the sense to separate it before checkout.

I'm guessing she has something similar to an EBT card. I worked at a grocery store and it swiped just like a credit card would.

you can ABSOLUTELY RETURN FOOD. you dont need any reason.
i work as a photographer inside of a walmart (not owned by walmart) and an old man returned milk just the other day. ppl return food items all the time, ive returned food items in the past also....

yes EBT card. exactly like a debit card and you do NOT have to separate the non-food items. you simply swipe the card and it automatically knows what is food and what isnt and you pay the balance on what is not food.

also, IM NOT RETURNING THE FOOD. i still want it. i bought it, its in my home, i just want to pay for it DIFFERENTLY. they can take my food stamps card and hold onto it while they refund my credit card and then re-ring up all the purchases and swipe my foodstamps card. not so fucking difficult.........

Why don't you cancel your internet and sell your PC to pay your food bills, instead of stealing tax dollars from the rest of us?

back in the day, they were vouchers. paper checks pretty much with dollar values. you would also have gotten change back if you didnt use the full check amount.

to save with all that printing and mailing or people having to pick up their "food stamps" vouchers, they created the debit card system and the funds are direct deposited to your account an a specified date monthly. simple

why should they trust you though? or even go through the trouble?

I can't blame them for refusing to do it. yes it sucks but understandable.

Where does it say she's trying to return food

Conceptually, I don't know what the problem would be with her showing up with the receipt and the food stamp thing, charging the food stamp account, and then refunding her visa.

Of course, I also would be surprised if WalMart doesn't want to bother. There may be other technicalities involved as well.

it was more to stop people from selling the paper stamps. i remember walking to a local store and a women offering me $100 worht of stamps for $50.

That's a fair question. When you get back from vacation try answering it.
