hey guys, i suck at OCing. I have been trying for quiet some time now and i cant get passed 2.2ghz. Can someone post some settings to try out or some that have actually worked? my gola is 2.6 . heres my set up

2 gigs of OCZ platinum pc3200 2-2-2-5
asus A8n-sli premium
optern 165 0551
antec PS 2.0 550W

i cant pass prim95 stable. how important is this? Has anyone hit 2.6 with this set up? I need some serous help.

Put your RAM on the 166 divider (lower if you can't pass it at this level)
Move your CPU up to 280

Gives you 2.52GHz

If you have 2 GB of memory with tight timings like that, I think you should run a divider getting you as close to 200mhz on the memory as possible (or else RAM will be what's holding you back). Give your FSB 280mhz (as mentioned earlier), and run it at a 3:4 divider if you have one. Should put your memory at 210mhz, and if this isn't stable, adjust your timings to 2-3-2-7 and it should work 🙂

Try them both out and see what works best for you. I'd loosen your RAM timings up a bit, if you put it at the divider of 166 which I mentioned your RAM will be at a 229MHz frequency, which is an overclock for that RAM.

Dude, I had the same stepping of opty 165, couldn't get past 2.2GHz either without it crashing, and I'm not a n00b at overclocking, look at my current OC.

2.6 on an Opty165 should not just be expected. Yes I know many have hit that, but there are many that can not.
2.4 would be more realstic for a 165, but your stepping may not even allow that.

What Vcore have you maxxed out at?

sweet !!! thanks for the tips on the mem.

as for vcore. i have only done stock, i know im such a losser, im to scared to try to up it. should i? is it safe?

Stock cooling is superb on the Opteron 165 and above.

Yes, you will be able to OC more if it's cooler, but I don't think you want to invest $800 bucks in a Mach II 😉

is there a def. diffrence in the diffrent steppings(weeks) or is it just luck? which ones are the worst? which ones are the best?

I've read that that RAM has tight timings at stock but doesn't overclock well, I would go a step further, bump the CPU voltage to 1.55 put the divider at 100 and then determine the max for the CPU, then you will know where you stand.

I'm a newb when it comes to overclocking. My meager attempts to date have been nothing significant, perhaps squeezing an extra 100mHz out of a processor. Truth be told, I'm not sure the "correct" way to do it and what needs to be taken into account. Any guide that I'm able to locate on the web seems to be old and outdated.

As can be seen from my sig, I have a very current system. Overclocking isn't a must at the moment, but a lot of the value in the Opty 165 processor is that it overclocks very easily to better speeds, or so I was lead to believe. At the moment I have it running at ~2.07gHz (around 220mHz FSB), a far cry from the 2.3-2.4gHz speeds I have seen reported on stock voltage and air cooling. Anything higher crashes when the CPU is stressed.

Something of note - I play EVE and the low system requirements makes it very easy to run two clients at the same time on decent machines. I am finding that I can't. After a few minutes of having two clients open and the game running, I get a memory dump BSOD and my system crashes and restarts. I'm running Corsair ValueRAM DDR400...is it possible this is limiting me and/or is potentially bad?

I did a search and couldn't find any "How to" type threads. If one exists, just point me to it. Or to a good guide somewhere on the net.

Virgin OCer here as well,

Should I do the same 166 divider and CPU to 280 with this rig:

Amd Opteron 165 CCBWE 0604TPMW
G.SKILL Extreme Series DDR 500 2 x 1GB
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
Enermax Liberty ELT500AWT ATX12V 500W

Im wondering if my DDR 500 RAM would change things?

Thanks!

Our rigs are pretty similiar. That G.Skill ram should do 260-280 pretty easily. Read the overclocking guide stickied in this forum and see how high your ram will clock. That will give you a better idea of which divider you need to use.

Hi there.

Yes your corsair value ram might be the problem. DFI boards dont take to corsair value that well. In fact, DFI boards are very picky about the type of ram you stick in em. If your using a dfi board, the king of overclocking, the honcho of speed, the sizzler of all sizzlers, you should pair it with a good set of ram.

Case in point:
I had a x2 3800 a while back, with corsair ram I couldnt get up past 2.2 even with the lowest dividers. Popped in my Gskills and away we went!

Yes 280 would require 166 dividers. I've tried 180 myself and its a no go. Well i dunno might work for you but you should try.

So has anyone had to reinstall Windows XP after OCing their Opteron 165? I am scared to OC now because the last time I tried my System32\drivers\nvatabud.sys file got corrupted and Windows would not start.

Has this happened to anyone else, how could this happen, and any ideas on how not to have this happen to me anymore?

Thank you
