Uh, separatists have always been and remain a minority in Quebec. They were just very vocal.

What was the early 90's vote--48% in favour to separate? I wouldn't call that very minor.

I really regret that Quebec did not separate. Canada would be much better off without this bilingual bullshit. We don't need to funnel our money into an entitlement mentality province.

Anyway to answer the OP: Yes, Quebeckers feel themselves very different than us Canadians. I personally do not see Quebeckers as Canadians at all.

That's a quintessentially Western viewpoint.

I'm glad to be bilingual and happy to have Quebec as a part of Canada. Sure, they may be an economic burden at times and overrepresented on the national political stage (which I'm sure is one of the reasons why AB/BC are so resentful), but modern Canadian culture and history started in both Upper and Lower Canada.

To downplay Quebec and the contributions it has made to the confederation is dishonest and short-sighted. Especially when their natural resources and strategic location (think NW passage) become more important to all Canadians in the next 20-50 years.

The fact that the First Nations of Quebec where going to seccede from Quebec if they secceded from Canada amused me.....if i recall the Quebecers where not very fond of that idea.

Haha, so true. Quebec City's slogan is something along the lines of "national capital" said in french.

I too have seen a lot of them on MW2 and make a special point to seek them out and slit their throats :)

The military was requested by the Quebec premier Robert Bourassa and it was sent to keep order and guard some spots while the police was hunting some terrorist cells.
I know this.

I was being facetious.

I wouldn't say Canada is a bilingual country; rather it is a country of two languages. Our politicians need to learn the difference.

Also, there is too much Quebec bashing in here IMO. Quebec is an amazing place which is proud of its heritage, much in the same way that the South is (I don't think the South is amazing, but it is a proud place). That is why you see the *QC*, as well as to signify the distinct language so they can talk to each other.

People wishing Quebec would separate don't realize what it is that Quebec really wants: they want to be left alone. No meddling by federal politicians like Trudeau did, etc. Let Quebec do what its population wishes for those under its constitutional jurisdiction. Not all the dissimilar to Alberta or BC, really. It's just that they can back up their threats to separate since they were once their own nation, unlike Alberta.

I'm going to have to agree with Silverpig. Cracked or whatever that website is that shows the different ways people argue on internet forums should add one where people say they were just being sarcastic dude, I wasn't serious.

Except that Quebec also wants Canada to continue to pay them billions a year to fund their social services. Want to be left alone? Okay, we'll send a stop payment note to the bank on that $8 billion/year headed your way.

Problem as I see it from an outside perspective is that Quebec wants to have it both ways. The whole deal with Bill 101 and the language police is antithetical to free speech especially given their demands that the rest of the country display both languages equally. It is a situation guaranteed to cause resentment of Quebec in rest of Canada while driving away otherwise productive citizens. There is a reason why "going down the 401" was a common phrase in the 1980's as well as why Toronto has eclipsed Montreal.

Canadians outside Quebec usually fail to understand most Quebec culture and thinking, so I'm not shocked to see that most Americans understand even less. It is intriguing, though, that so many who don't understand have not let that impede their wishes to form strong opinions and dismiss all Quebecers. Oh, by the way, there is no one "typical Quebecois". Indeed, I suspect the range of variation among people in that province is wider than in any other province of Canada.

Quebec City Quebeckers will largely refuse to speak English and treat you like a dick for trying. Good luck.

My wife speaks French so she can do all the communicating.

I speak Okie, German, Russian and a little bit of Cherokee. None of which will do me any good up there.

Let your wife do the talking and don't say a word, unless you want to have special sauce in your meals when going to restaurants. Most of Quebec east of Montreal can be very rude if no French is spoken. They are fine if you make an effort to speak French, but most quebecers will outright refuse to speak to you in English even when they do speak it.

Funny my experiences in Montreal and Quebec City have been quite the contrary. They could tell I was not a Canadian and had no issue with me not speaking French. My wife, on the other hand, was treated quite differently with her Canadian accented english.
