Some Q's on LCD

I got my 17" monitor stretched as far as it could at 1152*864@85Hz. I have it set to large font, so I can see the characters good without having to go down to 1024*768. I would like to have as much room to work as possible, because it is easier to write report and such when I can have the report on one side while the webpage I'm researching on at the other side. This monitor does not give me enough room and I wanna a new monitor. I'm looking into 17" or 19" LCD or 19 or 21" CRT. 17" LCD gives you about the same room as 19" CRT and correspondingly, 19" LCD same as 21" CRT, correct?

I would like some suggestion on which type and which specific model I should get. I'm looking to spend no more than $850.

Questions are:

Does LCD let you use many different resolutions like CRT will let you? I would like to stretch it to limit and use large font mode

How does contract, color quality and sharpness compare to CRT?

I really don't want any dead pixels. Whats the chance I'll get annoying dead pixels?

Update:

Question on CRT

If you think I should get a CRT, I am considering either Iiyama or Mitsubishi. I think these are the best as far as letting you tweak the smallest distortions out. I'm currently using a Mitsubishi 17" and its pretty good. Got a 17" Sony somewhere in basement. No more Sony!

It all depends on what you wanted to do. I believe that for your purpose an LCD would be great. LCD do quote on viewable size. So an 17' LCD would have 17' viewabe. Whereas a 19' CRT would come to about 17.X-18' viewable. Bear in mind that LCDs are not as fast as CRTs so if you require a lot of fast action graphics then a CRT would be more appropriate.

<< Does LCD let you use many different resolutions like CRT will let you? >>

Yes, but they always look much better when used at their "native" resoulution. Most 17 and 18 inch LCD's look best at 1280x1024. Whether you use large fonts or not is a separate issue.

<< How does contract, color quality and sharpness compare to CRT? >>

Contrast is about the same, CRT's generally have better color quality, and LCD's are generally a bit sharper.

<< I really don't want any dead pixels. Whats the chance I'll get annoying dead pixels?[/b]I'm just guessing, but I think maybe 1 out of 4 or 5 might have one or more bad pixels. And it gets more likely as your LCD panel increases in size, since the total number of pixels grows exponentially.
