Ok so I fixed the internet thing, just a bad thing with the drivers. So now I need to know why random rebooting happens and how I can fix it, I'll make the updated list of problems soon.

it could be ram causeing the random rebooting

download memtest86 and see if its producing mem errors...get it at memtest.org

just download the bootable floppy version from memtest.org. when you run the file it will create a bootup floppy disk for you. then just boot your pc from the floppy (just make sure your system is set to boot from floppy first)

Ok so maybe I am a retard or something, but I downloaded memtest86 (bootable floppy) , formattd the flopy disk, and extracted the files and then clicked on the thing it told me to, and did everything. But then when i try to boot from the floppy it says remove any media and press any key to start. what am i doing wrong?

Oh yeah and also the random reebootings are happening a lot more often and now when it reboots, it just keeps onr eebooting, it won't even go to windows. Last time I was doing a test and it just turned off before it even finsihed, could this be a faulty motherboard or power supply? Cause the random reebootings appear to happen when I'm doing stuff that requires the USB ports (i have a usb wireless adapter) so like if i do the internet, it'll turn off, (i have a usb keybaord) and so like if i'm playing games with the keyboard it'll trun off. Although it could be something else. Alson one it was doing some bad bios recovery thing, and made this weird noise cause it was trying to search for a floppy disk or a cdrom.

probably a bad floppy disk, or your floppy drive needs to be cleaned. if you have a different floppy disk you can try it

I did a "burn in" test from one of the programs the other guy posted. My computer just restared in the middle of it. It's happening more and more frequently now. For example when i first got it, it would restart after like 3 hours of games, now I can't even get into the internet without it restarting, i can't even get as far as getting to anandtech or turning on aim. I have to do work on other computers, becuase i don't want it restarting in the middle of a doccument (that is if it would let me even get to the point in opening microsoft word). I still haven't gotten memtest86 working, but i'll try again on friday. Although I bet the computer would restart in the middle of the test. Also now it doesn't restart. Like say if I turn the computer on, and it randomly restarted, it would restart in the middle of loading windows, then it would restart at the begging bios screen, then it would restart again, and sometimes it say bad bios after restarting a lot and tries to look for a floppy. Sometimes it doesn't show anything and the monitor gets no signal, and it makes this annoying sound coming from the dvdrw drive. If it says bad bios again i'm gonna try and let it stay that way, cause I've never seen it restart when it is trying to get a bios. Which could mean it's not a power issue?

bump, also how can i find out if it's a power supply issue? (i don't have spare ones, except one from a dell pc, which I doubt would be powerful enough.)

Could you replace your graphics card with something else? I had a problem with my power supply and my 9700 Pro with random reboots after a few hours of usuage. Your best bet is to try another card (an older lower powered model ) and see if that helps. But you dont have anything on your system that your power supply cannot handle. Have you tried the ASUS forums to see if anybody else has had the same problem. That would be the best place to start.

CD.

you are moving on to other things when you still havent checked some of the most likely stuff

if you cant get a floppy to work for memtest, then download the .iso and create a bootable cd

From the nvidia driver page, it seems that the Geforce and TNT2 family use the same driver package. So if you downloaded it off their website, I think you can use them.

CD.

i really wish you would just run memtest, it could very easily help you track down the problem.

and just cause the "burn in" test you mentioned caused your system to reboot doesnt mean you shouldnt run memtest. memtest runs from a bootable disk (ie. windows is not running) and as its running it will show any memory errors. if it finds any then you will have narrowed down the problem 🙂

What if my computer turns off in the middle of the test?

why ask "what if" instead of just running the tests?

but to answer your question. if it does reboot durring the test then one thing you know is that your problem isnt "software" related (ie. virus, corrupt windows system files from faulty harddrive, etc)

Ok so I ran memtest86 and it restarted after like 2-3 minutes of it. I also did a bunch of other tests (like taking out the sound card, or switching up the cables and stuff like that). Two things I should mention though is that windows became a lot slower when I disconnected my dvd drives from the ide port. Windows was faster even when the dvd drives were connected but had no molex connector in them. Also the second thing I'd like to mention is that at first I had my raptor running on SATA power, I then added the normal power thing and my computer did a whole adaware scan and halfway through a burn in test before it restarted as oppsoed to restarting 1/4 of the way into an adaware scan. I then took off the sata power and only had the normal power on and it was either the same amount of time or a little less (I will do this test again). I also want to explain that when I first built my computer It would randomly restart after playing a long time of games and it would RESTART. But now it will restart when my computer is on for like 5 minutes and it won't even restart, it'll turn on, but once it gets to the windows startup screen it turns off and try's to restart until eventually it just gives no signal and it's a black screen. So what should I do now? I'm still looking for my old video cards so i'll try that when I find it. But what should I do now? Thanks for all your help so far!

it sounds like either
a) you have a mis-seated (improperly seated) cpu and/or HS/F
b) your memory is bad, or one stick of it is bad
c) your processor is overheating - caused from a

Ok so I will check the heatsink fan. But:

1: How can I improperly place the CPU? The triangle is pointing at the thing and besides it wouldn't let me place it any other way.

2: How do I reseat the HSF? Like should I clean the thermal paste? If so how?

3: Keep in mind that my temps (according to Asus probe) is 34 C. And the computer is actually pretty cool and when I touched the heatsink it was pretty cool. Nevertheless I will try and see if it's my HS/F.

4: Also keep in mind that my computer would never restart like this until now.

5: How can I check if it's my RAM? I will try keeping in one stick at a time and switching them off, but if they both are faulty how would I know? I don't have any spare ram. And don't even think to tell me tough luck. (If you do please send me some ram 😀 )

Bump, I will check the HSF on Friday and the memory maybe tommrow, I'll do a test with a different vide card as soon as I find it. So far I need some input on the 3rd post in this page.

Bump still looking for another video card and also answers to theese questions:

1: How can I improperly place the CPU? The triangle is pointing at the thing and besides it wouldn't let me place it any other way.

2: How do I reseat the HSF? Like should I clean the thermal paste? If so how?

3: How can I find out if it's a power issue or a motherboard issue?

Bump, and also tommrow I will have time to check my hs/f so anwser the question above and also I found a video card and I will try that tommorow too. Anyway goodnight for now =)
