I just got back from Guangzhou yesterday night. They built a college town. The town composes of 10+ universities, has 300k students. It was ridiculously large, I am talking about buildings after buildings after buildings.

I don't see what is so shocking about these photos. Hello people, we have tons of homeless and trailer parks in America today...

What if DaWhim is posting from China, or Japan, or somewhere else?

What if he's not?

Pictures of those eras always fill me with this immense sadness, as I know that the people, places, and life depicted are gone forever. Those pictures are all we have of them.

Thank you for posting them.

The fact that you put trailer parks in the same league as those pictures is laughable, and shows how hopelessly naive you are.

Uh, first of all my family comes from a rural Chinese background and I've been to those places. So you can go fvck yourself.

Second, the only picture in that series that even shows any sort of extreme poverty is the first one. And it's no worse than our modern homeless.

Background, yeah. Did *you* grow up poor?

I grew up in rural Ecuador. I agree that those pictures don't show extreme poverty, but they still show MUCH more poverty than an American trailer park. American trailer parks are a showcase of bad money management, not actual poverty.

As for the modern homeless, you'd be surprised how much money some of them make. And there's usually a reason for the ones that don't...be it mental illness, drug abuse, or whatever...and even so they can get free food and a roof over their heads (often better than the truly poor in 3rd world countries) at their local homeless shelter.

Better job than many Americans do
As good as a trailer park
Not doing bad, he owns two mules
Better than a trailer park
How many executions do we do in Texas?[l
Better than a trailer park
Well dressed, well fed

I made no judgements on the existence of extreme rural poverty. Just what was presented in those pictures.

Likewise, I made no judgements on why Americans may be homeless. Just that their condition is no better than what is depicted.

You're full of it,
Depends on the inside, and the housekeeper...I've seen it go both ways,
True, but lots of Americans own a LOT more than that,
You're full of it,
Texas sucks anyway,
Yeah, nothing wrong with that guy.

Value judgements are hard to make...I've known a lot of very, very poor people who were "worse off" than many Americans, but simply because of their attitude they were getting a lot more out of life. However, just because the people in those pictures were able to make the most out of what they had, doesn't mean they have anywhere near as much wealth or opportunity as pretty much any American does, even one in a trailer park.

Oh, and if anyone is interested in seeing some of the issues in modern China the media doesn't present frequently...

http://www.cbc.ca/chinarises/intro/index.html

It's a four hour series. Just made this year, so it's very current. All of them deal with the problems of the poor/rural. Airs on Discovery HD in the states, not sure what other channels it might be on as well...

I'm thinking we're talking about different kinds of trailer parks. You're probably thinking the fat slob who sits in his trailer with his fat wife eating McDonalds and watching cable TV. I'm talking people who are basically homeless except for having a trailer. Yes, that does exist, even here.

EDIT: Again, I'm not talking opportunity of other factors. Just how the people live.

Wow. Whenever I imagine china I imagine this or this or this :(

You should imagine this.

I wish I could be like you guys. I imagine this.

goddamned sambo.

its just amazing how china gets away with having a "peaceful" image while it threatens democracies like taiwan and props up insane dictators like the one in north korea though. north koreas one military ally is china, they get most of their resources to keep running from china. they starved a million to death under the protection of china, and developed and proliferated their weapons under china. and now they are building missles that will get ever closer to being able to nuke any part of the us. china protects them because it keeps the west busy, it ties us down and makes everyone go to china for "help" on this issue since they essentially control this nutcase state. and everyone ignores the sh*t that goes on in china because the north koreans are so much worse. its all so convenient. if kim goes a little more insane and feels his power slipping maybe he'll nuke south korea or washington..definetly not china. win win for china. pretty slick eh? china's government is amoral and devious. they do trade with every pariah/terrorist state. its just a fact.

If we're just talking about how the people live, I'll agree we have some who are worse than those pics. Especially because urban poor is much worse than rural poor...I really didn't mind rural poor so much, then again, I was pretty young.

I still think opportunity counts, though :p
