Yeah, it is really sad, especially in contrast with the rich glitzy culture of some of the urban areas. Although there is poverty in the urban areas as well. Mostly it is a problem that the upper class is benefitting from China's economic boom and getting very rich while those on the bottom (which comprise a high percentage of the population) have not benefited much if at all, and in fact may become worse off as prices rise due to inflation. The growth of the middle class in China is promising, but I don't know if it will happen fast enough. If not, China's domestic problems could become worse as the lower classes become more angry at the lack of help from the government and resentful of the wealth and indulgence of the rich.
