Those are some enlightening photographs. I'm guessing by this post and your avatar that you're Chinese or atleast oriental?

The upper class have to get uber rich before the middle class starts to bulgeon.

The inequality you are describing is the result of the capital market, being able to obtain the indulgence of the rich is the driving force behind hard work and innovations. Although the poors in China might look poor, the overall growth of the chinese economy probably give them a better standard of living.
