The first link was all test planes getting certified to do crosswind landings.

The second link is of Hong Kong?s Kai Tak International. That airport was literally a death trap... they should've closed it down long before they did.

Ever seen a B-52 try to land in a crosswind? the landing gear can actually be turned about 45 degrees, IIRC, to compensate - so the gear lands rolling straight ahead, but the plane looks really cockeyed :p

The second link is because of the approach for that airport. I guess theres some buildings just off the runway which keep planes from approaching straight on. Additionally, theres some big hills further back that might limit some planes ability to approach in line with the runway.

Yeah, I've seen videos of that where the plane is pointed one way and moving in a different direction. Apparently (according to the google posters) that secodn video was a common occurance at that airport.

Ok, I was a little off: the wheels can be turned 20 degrees either right or left, for a total of 40 degrees. That's enough to let the plane land in a 90-degree crosswind, though :)

CNN played a crazy landing in the UK during last week's windstorms. Have to find video.

Impressive stuff! I have a video somewhere around here, that I took while riding in the observers seat of one of our own jets. We were landing in Nome and the crosswind was about 30 knots. We were crabbed so much into the wind that even though we were flying straight at the runway, much of the approach I filmed out of the SIDE WINDOW of the cockpit. I think I have it on a CD at work... 'cause it's not on this HDD. It's not as hairy as those approaches at Kai Tak... those are just nuts. One of our recently retired pilots flew into Kai Tak when he was an Eva Air 747 captain before joining us. He sure has some fun stories.
