A big puddle of wet paint. Then you can follow the tracks and see where to go.

Or, dig some random holes.

Or, just leave the hose running for a while and get a really good mud swamp going. See what gets stuck in there.

Roofing nails have a flat square head about 3/4" x 3/4". They would be a cheap alternative if you can't find caltrops. The flat head gaurentees the nail points upwards.

Home Depot sells them by the hundreds.

Just be careful with what you do. Sadly, if you were to put spikes in your yard and the kid gets out and starts running, ending up with a spike through his foot, you're probably gonna get sued, and probably gonna lose. Don't jump on me for saying it because that kind of crap makes me want to eliminate lawyers, but it's the sad reality of our litigious society.

A kid in Dunwoody (affluent section of Atlanta) decided to donut a very nicely manicured lawn in the neighborhood with his new Jeep a few years ago. The owner caught him, scared him out of his Jeep with his gun, then proceeded to demolish the Jeep with a sledge hammer. Guess who ended up with a brand new Jeep a few months later?

1 piece of plywood.
mark out a grid of 1 inch squares, leave a 6 inch border around it without squares
Drill pilot holes through the squares so the nails stick straight up when pounded in
Put in spikes, all the same length (buy a 25 pound box at home depot)
Total cost, about $30.
Paint it black.

Spike strips, caltrops = obviously out to damage car.
Bed of nails? "Your honor, if I were intentionally trying to damage a car, I'd use spike strips or caltrops. I had the bed of nails because I found it soothing to lay on it."
THEN, to add insult to injury, take the other guy to small claims court to pay for your bed of nails. (include labor in the cost)

Also, before you paint it black (or green, or whatever matches the ground) lay on it and have someone smash a cinderblock on your chest... get the video and post to ATOT.

The only problem is when the punk retailates for puncturing his tires, etc. The best solution is to set up cameras and catch the ass in the act. Show the videos to the parents (or police if you dont get the response from the parents you desire) and present them a bill for the property.

It sucks to not be able to get justice while they are breaking the law (puntured tires, scaring them with gun, etc), but in today's society we are punished for any retribution even while protecting what is rightfully ours.

I would put a TON of salt water down. When he rides over it and gets all that salt water on the underside of his car....oh man is he in for a surprise in about 10 years....RUST ALL OVER!!

But I also like the idea of digging a deep trench (maybe 3-4 feet deep) and concealing it somewhat so the car gets majorly messed up when it hits it

Puncturing hsi tires sounds look the best idea to me, but if you twist up nails and put them in they lawn they might just sink in if he runs over them, and using a 2x4 will ensure that they do go in his tire and make air leak out, but no idiot is gonna run over a random 2x4 unless it's buried - and you'd need at least a couple of them to ensure that he hit them. I think some sort of wide, flat bottomed nail would work the best so it stays upside down and doesn't sink in, and so it isnt visible. Paint them green or black and just place them in a line all the way across your lawn. If you find them, it'll be probably the cheapest and fastest way to do this.

Yeah, (presuming you are in the States), you have to be very careful what you do TO anyone, even if they are trespassing. If they are injured on your property, you become legally liable. Your best bet is to catch them in the act, get a license plate number and report them to the police. Of course, you could just follow them, and when they park somewhere, place a few nails under their tires. That way it can't be traced directly back to you.

Other creative options include plugging up the tailpipe with a potato or something.
Put his vehicle up on blocks, and steal all 4 tires.

Come on guys, let's get this going... the key is make sure it's no where near your property.

Why don't you also set up a motion sensor in your yard that turns on a light when something comes close? You can get those at Home Depot.

jeez, if you're going to set up motion detectors, you may as well install auto-aiming turret guns!
