What will Obama do? That remains to be seen. But I know what GWB would do, he would invade Nigeria!

The USS Iowa is sitting in Suisun Bay not doing anything.

Shouldn't take a whole lot of work to make sure she's seaworthy and find some sailors who remember how to work the 16 inch guns and pound the living shit out of where they're operating from. That's how countries used to handle this sort of thing.

It would probably take a lot of work to make sure she's seaworthy, there are likely almost no sailors still in the fleet who know how to work/maintain her 16 inch guns, there is likely almost no ammunition available for them and the ammo that is around is probably of questionable use having sat on the shelf for almost 20 years, the pirates are probably operating from a coastal city filled with poor, law abiding citizens whose deaths would create a PR nightmare for the US while doing very little to disrupt the pirates' operations, etc. Need I go on?

Every time something happens overseas I love seeing the psychopathic armchair generals come out of the woodwork on here and scream for a bloodbath to fix whatever problem we have.

The guns dont use conventional ammo. They load a projectile onto a conveyor that loads the projectile then its followed by bags of powder. The targeting systems were updated in the 80s.

More than likey there are projectiles somewhere and black powder, well....

They think the pirates did not realize the ship they raided had a American crew. The ultimate Oh Sh!t moment . I can imagine the pirate leader hearing his men say "game over, man , game over,. I didn't sign up for this !"

Trolling much guys?

So what's your suggestion? A stiffly worded retort? Finger shaking? Foot stamping? Panty bunching? Telling them that 'they broke the rules'?

Obama's (now completed) appeasement tour of Europe will do nothing to show anyone that he will have the cajones to stand up to anybody. If he actually authorizes a SEAL, or Delta Force, op against these clowns, has them summarily executed on the spot, and hangs their bodies up for display on the ship to feed the gulls, I'll apologize for my comments turn out to me incorrect.

Showing lack of faith in our leaders isn't trolling.

Make sure to send Jack Bauer.

You've been watching too many movies. The real world doesn't work like this because it can't. You need intel in advance, and a means to insert and extract. You have to know who the targets are. You have to be able to get to them. There's a hundred bits of logistics that you are ignorant of. If this were all there was to it, there wouldn't be a problem now.

This isn't Counter Strike.

Um, I don't play Counter Strike and yes I do understand the real world and what it takes to mount a real world military operation. I wasn't necessarily trying to offer a solution per se; my intention was to engage Robor. Poking your head up and yelling 'Troll!' doesn't add any real value to the conversation.

This is a nasty problem that the world is facing and will probably require a nasty solution to deal with it. The pirates don't give a rat's fettid backside about international law, the UN, the US, or any other country's POV. They're doing this because they know that they can get away with it. Saying things like 'we're sorry about being arrogant' isn't going to make these scumbags play nice.

I think the best overall solution is in prevention. Either countries should arm their ships with the means necessary to protect themselves or the international community should commit the resources necessary to escort these ships through Somali waters. If the pirates attack, SOP should be to blow their boats out of the water no questions asked.

I still question whether or not Obama / the UN will have the wherewithall to do this, which was the real intent of my earlier post.

For sake of clarification I wasn't speaking about mounting a rescue mission. I was referring to an operation which takes a fight to the areas where they are based. I've found that the most vocal people who advocate force tend to be the ones who go home in bags first. That was fine, but they tended to take others with them. If you aren't one of those, my apologies.

I'll go into more detail later.

I honestly can't believe that this has gone on for as long as it has when the solution is so simple. Kill every last one of them.

But...but they're poor, impoverished people of color! We can't allow a big bad Western military to so much as ruffle a hair on their widdle heads!

I think we should level the entire Somali coast and patrol it to make sure that no vessels leave the coast. Perhaps land mines could be planted up and down the Somali coast as well.

The fact that they attacked American vessels ticks me off. I hope we authorize some real force to blow those pirates out of the water.

They used fire hoses to keep them from boarding the first time. Then when the pirates returned the pirates sprayed the decks with AK-47 fire to keep the crew off it so they could board. There was only 4 pirates. The crew overpowered the pirates and got control back of the deck, but one of the pirates had taken the captain hostage. The crew set up a trade, pirates for the captain, and said they released the pirates during the trade, but the pirates went against their word and kept the captain.

That is what I hear watching ABC news.
They also had an interview done a few weeks ago that is one of the crew members on that boat now. He said that in Somalia the pirates are hailed and celebrated as heroes when they return . They bring wealth to a poor country so the people are okay with it.

Well the pirates are not on the ship anymore, they are sitting in a lifeboat with the captain. They are expected to ask for more money than usual since Americans are supposed to be worth more. Obviously we could fire one time and blow the lifeboat to bits. They have said that the destroyer is an observer only at this point and that it is standard policy to let the boat owners handle the situation. So the ball is in Maersk court right now .

Don't want to kill the innocent captain, though.

it was just delivering food to east africa.

they should've just let the pirates take it over, then let them distribute the food.
