I'd like to think that I eat healthy and am active, but I read about the benefits of taking a daily multi-vitamin. Do you guys recommend a specific brand/type?

Let me know if you need any details about my diet or anything else non personal ;)

Thanks for reading,
Stu

I just buy the 300 pack of premium vitamins at costco and take one in the A.M, one in the P.M. People will disagree with me, but some specialty vitamins cost 3-4x as much, aren't made to USP standards, and don't provide marginal benefit....

I dont recall where I read it, but the multi-vitamin pills aren't as good as taking the pills by themselves. Yea sounds ridiculous to pop 5 pills at a time, but I just take Vitamin E and C. Two pills, not bad but I'm sure I could use the other vitamins but I figure I get them from my food source.

I thought multi-vitamins are. If you read the back it shows you the breakdown of how much are actually in each pill. I'd rather take them individually knowing I'm getting my daily requirements.

Not for people who want to be healthy/grow muscle/etc. Vitamins are an important factor in a healthy life, even if your doctor says otherwise. The common argument is that the food you eat these days covers all the vitamins, but that's bs. No one eats every single vitamin.

I'm healthy and strong and never take vitamins. I'm pretty certain every vitamin that your body requires is available through diet and sunshine.

A vitamin is a vitamin. There's no difference in taking them separately, and you'll lose the benefits they have for each other. Some help with absorption of others.

I take Centrum. Some days I don't take one, but usually I drink Ovaltine which has good doses of the major vitamins.

Right I understand, but if you look at the breakdown you'll see that it doesnt give you the recommended dosage. I just looked at Centrum's label, it's high on Vitamin A and Vitamin D, but you're getting close to nothing w/ Vitamin C and E (two essential Vitamins to boost the immune system).

I think a multivitamin is probably a good idea since lots of people probably don't get a well balanced diet.

They had to add iodine to salt, and vitamin D to milk because so many people weren't eating enough seafood and getting enough sunshine.

I agree that all those specialty vitamins seem like a scam unless a doctor prescribes them for a deficiency. There are lots of women who are iron deficient. Of course too much is bad for you also.

I used to work for the company behind Nature Made brand of vitamins. The quality control and assurance behind the product were exceptional.
If you have a balanced diet of the food groups, there is no reason to concern yourself with vitamins. I wouldn't 'not' recommend them however if you need peace of mind. As far as supplements go, just be wary of the amount of heavy metals.

Not sure which label you are looking at, but mine says:
A: 70%
Various B: 100%
C: 100%
D: 100%
E: 100%
K: 31%

My understanding is big NIH studies have basically shown taking vitamins has no association with healthier living or living longer, other studies show bascially 99% is peed out into the toilet.

ya this is true of vitamin C and all the vitamin Bs. excesses of C and Bs can lead to immediate system changes (B12 can give an uncomfortable hot flash if enough is taken at once) but pass through the system very fast. the lipid soluble vitamins like D, E, K, A all get broken down or absorbed into adipose tissue if not immediately used. E seems to have positive affects in excess, whereas D and A excesses should be avoided (I suspect K as well).

I have taken a multivitamin for years. However, it makes me sad that for something so studied and ubiquitous, there's still no proof AT ALL that an otherwise healthy individual benefits from taking a multi-vit. I've made all the arguments how we cannot get them all from food, either, but the fact remains.

I was reading through reader's digest recently and they had a thing on these. Although I've known that too many of a fat soluable vitamin could be bad, I figured the numbers would be high. In fact, even in numbers one gets from a standard multi-vitamin, there have been studies showing INCRESED risk for certain things.

Your favorite bodybuilder's quotes aside, there is little real evidence at all that otherwise healthy sedentary people or athletes should be taking a multi-vitamin or any other vitamin supplement.

As far as supplements go, just be wary of the amount of heavy metals.

Yes, guys shouldn't take Iron. This is why men's one a day stopped putting it in. It's an example of new science that debunks the old and then we go "oh, crap, I wish I knew that before."

I have a bottle of Twinlab Dual-Tabs, which are great multi-vitamins. I've basically stopped taking them. I still take glucosamine/chondroitin, though tailoring that back, I think it's probably of little benefit to me, which leaves me now only taking in 2 grams of fish oil/day.

Vitamin supplements are proven to increase intelligence in developing children. Getting 100% of every vitamin from food is very difficult.

Yea, I forget about VD milk and Iodized salt. I consume those myself, but I'm not sure that I "need" to. Perhaps the Pacific Northwest has insufficient sunlight, so maybe I do need supplimental VD in the Winter? I dunno? I eat alot of seafood, so Iodine is probably fine.

On the other hand, I may be getting the vitamins I need from the food I eat, but I'm not so sure it's that healthy (even though by all measures it appears that I am). I eat lots of fruits and veggies, sure, but I am also a carnivore that enjoys red meat and I love ocean filters like Oysters and Clams and such.

Heavy metals in Seafood and fish, recalls of Meat and Veggies...its not like I should be too concerned about some vitamins.

I second the Performance Premium Multi-vitamins at Costco.
