Sold my generator on craigslist, minor lulz had

Excellent ownage and glad you got the amount you agree on. I'm about to list my first items ever on CL. I hope I don't run into any a-holes. Haggling up front is fine, but once we agree on a price, it's done.

By the way: the TAGS for this thread ROCK. In fact, rarrange them it's a the new thread title! Cheap scumbag, adroid ownage...lulz ensue.

It amazes me people have the balls to do the "show up with less money than was agreed upon" trick. That's just asking to get your ass kicked.

Yea this burns my ass. I was selling a fish tank and stand one time on craigslist and the guy agreed to my price. Came to pick it up and he pulled that garbage, brought $40 less than we had agreed on. He said "Well this is all I have, so I guess we'll have to agree on this." I said "No, I guess you aren't leaving with a fish tank." He tried to argue until I kicked him out of my garage. This seems to happen frequently on craigslist, drives me nuts.

99% of the time i'll offer 20 - 25% less than asking which is a little douchey.. but we always agree on a price before meeting up.

Nothing wrong at all with haggling beforehand. Like other posters are saying, its when they show up offering less than what was already agreed upon that pisses sellers off.

However in my case, the guy showed up and just straight up lied about the agreed upon price which is way worse than trying to haggle some more. At this point, I had to bust his lying ass out. 🙂

Yep.
When they do that, I cease the deal immediately.

I sell a lot on Craigslist, two things I do not tolerate: Trying to haggle on the first reply or call, and trying to haggle AFTER the terms are agreed upon. If they start out asking if I'll take less, I tell them to pound sand & cease all communications, if by phone, I simply hang up.

I do price things with some wiggle room, but Good God, at least have the decency to at least SEE or ASK specific questions about what I have before you start haggling.

I share the OP's joy in using a tech tool to keep a transaction honest, but I was imagining the way that a tv commercial would handle the same thing.

The buyer would be some rough looking character trying to rip off a wholesome looking nerd who luckily owns a new Android device. As the buyer leaves the voice over announcer declares that the thing practically pays for itself.

And after he got completely owned, he had the nerve to complain that the gas tank was only half full...as if that was going to get me to lower my price???

I told him, "Well, its not Christmas so you only get half a tank"

I should have siphoned what was left in it right into my car in front of him just for being a prick.

lol...

Should have just dumped the gas on the ground. Guy tries to short you $60 then bitches about half a tank of gas. Here asshole, enjoy an empty tank.

I love when people say "oh, and I'll pay you cash" like it sweetens the deal. Lol, like I can take a credit card or ATM card. If anyone showed up to my house with a cheque I would laugh at their face.

lol, i've used my square reader for CL transactions before.

I'm surprised he didn't try to make up the difference by "trading" you something for it.

The few times I have tried to sell something on craigslist I get people who think I want to trade them for some junk they want to get rid of instead of cash money.

Seriously. I have no problem with lowball offers, but don't try to change the deal at the last minute. If someone pulled that shit on me they'd be paying full price or leaving empty handed.

From what I understand, it's practically the norm now for craigslist transactions. If you only wanted to pay $200 for something, agree to pay $250 if that's what it takes to seal the deal, then show up with only $200 cash. Apparently many sellers just cave so they can get the deal done. Why low-ball during negotiations when you can low-ball in person when you had already agreed on a deal?

no fucking way i would cave in person.
