Sold my generator on craigslist, minor lulz had

So I listed my old Honda generator on Craigslist for $300. I get a response from some guy saying he can give me $200 for it. I told him $250 and he has himself a deal. He agrees.

Pretty standard craigslisting so far...

He shows up, I haul the heavy ass generator up 2 flights of stairs for him and turn it on and show that it produces power. He says it looks good, then says "We agreed on $190 right?"

Me: No, we agreed on $250.

Him: Im positive it was $190.

Me: I pull out my Android and open our gmail convo and show him agreeing to $250.

Him: Deer in headlights.

Owned! Got my $250. :awe:

Good for you OP.

You should have charged him a delivery fee for pulling it up the stairs.

generator - $250
delivery fee - $200
cranking fee - $50
fuel fee for testing - $25
tax for trying to cheat you - $1,000

It amazes me people have the balls to do the "show up with less money than was agreed upon" trick. That's just asking to get your ass kicked.

And after he got completely owned, he had the nerve to complain that the gas tank was only half full...as if that was going to get me to lower my price???

I told him, "Well, its not Christmas so you only get half a tank"

I should have siphoned what was left in it right into my car in front of him just for being a prick.

lol...

Nice. People can be downright scumbags when trying to "wheel and deal"... if you can call it that.

You should've offered to piss in the tank to fill it up. 😀

You must work for the phone company! 😀

nah, you should have just siphoned it all into your mouth, swallowed it, belted out a primal screen and beat your chest.

storm out of his apartment with 250 in hand, yelling "O'Doyle Rules!"

That's another reason why I hate craigslist. It's just a pain in the ass and so many cheapies. I sold an old car. It was in decent shape, only 80k on the motor but an older car. Advertised for $550 hoping to get $500 out of it. Get a guy to show up and look, they of course offer $400 or something. I say, nope...but if you take it right now and have cash I'll do $450 and just be done. So they haul out cash and give me 4 100 dollar bills....I'm like "where's the rest"...."oh ya, sorry, I thought it was $400, I guess you want another $50.....you guess right, now take your $450 car and GTFO before I change my mind.

When I use it I just make it easy. Bought a modded Xbox from a guy. He had it all listed for like $250 or something...tons of games and whatnot. I said I'll drive over for $225 right now. Go over, give him $225 say thanks dude and leave.

Yeah CL is full of twats. But, I'm usually a pretty easy guy to deal with. I usually put the price up a lot higher than what I really want for it, then I get people offering me the price I want, and then go for it.

Fortunately, I haven't had to deal with much of this on CL. People always wanting to haggle... yes, but douchebaggering like you and the OP are describing... nope.

Sold the wife's coupe that I had listed 1 week at 11.5k, and had absolutely no bites. Dropped it to 11k (well under BB), and had 3 calls inside of a couple hours. One guy asked how flexible I was... I said, well, not very... as I just knocked it down and have already received several calls on it.

Met him in a public parking lot and rode with him on a test drive. He agreed to buy it, gave me $100 to hold it. Met him at a credit union the next day with bank issued check in hand.

Today, I'll be buying a Droid2 for the wife, who has a POS Samsung Rogue. Few quick emails back and forth, and I am going to meet the guy to pick it up this evening. No funny business from my end. Just here's what you asked for thanks for the phone.

CL is a great place if you know what you are doing... but you just have to be wary of the assholes that try to abuse it.

From what I understand, it's practically the norm now for craigslist transactions. If you only wanted to pay $200 for something, agree to pay $250 if that's what it takes to seal the deal, then show up with only $200 cash. Apparently many sellers just cave so they can get the deal done. Why low-ball during negotiations when you can low-ball in person when you had already agreed on a deal?

Just another sign that nobody feels any shame about giving their word then going back on it. It's merely a "tactic".

Haven't had those kinds of problems myself. Hell, Wife just sold an old bookcase for $15 and we left it on the front porch and had them leave the money under the recycling bin. No problems.

I love when people say "oh, and I'll pay you cash" like it sweetens the deal. Lol, like I can take a credit card or ATM card. If anyone showed up to my house with a cheque I would laugh at their face.
