Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games!

Vancouver had the death of an Olympic athlete, poor conditions, voided tickets, disorganized events (biathlon?), and riots in downtown Vancouver.

1) The Vancouver track was built to be fast. The Sochi track was built after the Vancouver death and thus ran quite slow. Sochi would have had a fast track if it weren't for Vancouver.

2) Conditions in Sochi were must worse. Rain was melting away the bottom part of the course.

3) It was standing room sections to a few events in Cyprus because they didn't have enough snow.

4) no clue what you mean by (biathlon?)

5) I was in downtown Vancouver for a couple nights during the Olympics, and there were no riots. There were a fuck ton of people singing Journey walking down the street though. The real riot was after the Stanley Cup loss the next year if you're thinking about that.

Canada played great, but I think it's a pity that Sweden lost so many important centers because of injuries.

Henrik Sedin, Zetterberg (and Bäckström) had given Sweden some needed power in the offense. One might argue that it shows Sweden doesn't have much depth though.
Finland played great considering all the players they lost.

Since World Cup ended, the olympics is the only time when all NHL players are available, and those bastards go and get injured😡
I want all countries to really have the best teams in the olympics.

Yeah I found it was too bad that they had a few players out like that. I find it's not as honorable a victory when you know they are missing some good players. TBH I was kind of vouching for them getting at least a goal.

Losing three top of the line centers, two during the tournament, would be a big blow to any team. You can only have so much depth.

Franzen was out as well, Canada was missing Stamkos and Tavares but their depth is incredible.

But missing players aside, the swedish team just seemed to lose confidence as the game went on. They made many cheap mistakes, and at the end they just wanted it all to be over.
During the first period at least, they seemed to have some fighting spirit.

It was a hell of a coaching job to get the entire team to buy into that defensive system, the pressure was amazing, probably some of the best i've ever seen.

Indeed, it was like watching a machine. I only watched the last 2 games, but each game played out the exact same way: first 10 minutes Play was even; then as time went on Canada dominated more and more.

It was almost like in the beginning they were learning how to kill, then once figuring it out, they proceeded to do it.

However, I'm just waking up and may be prone to over dramatization.

The Russians ended with the highest medal count (33) gaining about a 100 percent increase from their average in 2010 (15), 2006 (22), 2002 (13). Home field advantage was a little too good for them. Although Italy saw a big increase in Turin, the US and canada each saw only small bumps in home field advantage from their Olympics.

wonder if Russians would still say it's a sporting failure if they didn't win Men's hockey Gold?

its funny the way the u.s. tried to rig the medal count by introducing fake sports like "slopstyle", "ski halfpipe" and "team skating" and by trying to cheat at skating judging and it didnt work. there were so many american fails at this olympics. i hope they dont let bodie miller come back, he did so bad [again] that they had to invent a new olympic medal just for him--"tied for third"

So many fails like finishing second in medal count to Russia? I'm lost.

I spoke with someone that was in Sochi and he confirmed the Director of the Olympics did indeed wear that shirt :biggrin:

Uhhhh...almost everyone says that Russia was not as prepared as Vancouver and wasted a large percent of its budget on graft. The only problem I remember with the Vancouver games is that there really wasn't any snow in the Cypress Mountains for some events there. Considering the truly shitting skiing in Sochi, Russia sure didn't win with snow quality.

The luge death was a horrible tragedy, but from what I recall, the more experienced lugers had no problems with the Vancouver track, and were quite upset at having to start from the lower starting point for the competition.

Pretty much every single winter olympics has had weather issues causing events to be delayed. Anyone who lives near mountains knows how variable the weather is.

The riot he is thinking about is the one day where those "black anarchists" or whatever showed up and smashed a window in The Bay downtown. There were 10 of them, it was over in 20 minutes, and then nothing happened after that. Well, there was one group of people at the art gallery protesting for marmot rights and equality because MukMuk was only an "assistant mascot" and not a full mascot 🙂
