what ray said :)

and, just while i'm at it....
i needed to reboot my pc, so i brought up the SoB panel, clicked stop, waited til it said start, then clicked exit.
was about 74% through a full test.
when SoB restarted, it was back to 0% for the full test?
why would it do this????

Do I have to do anything to register my name and team, or is that part of the normal installation. I've got about an hour until my PC is free of it's current work and will be installing 2 instances using the service install. I have the instructions for the install....
Am i ready?

Did you reboot after installing SoB?

Typing in your username & putting Anandtech in the team box is just about all you need to do. Just reboot after installing. :)

Hi Andy.

One of my PCs did the same thing after I loaded SOB.

I rebooted it again and it now keeps the percentage...

I have no idea why....

Can I run SOB on my AMD 4800+ dual core using a normal install where both cores do half of the work and still get credit ??

I had installed SOB with 2 instances and it ran a little too hot and locked up.

I just got mine running (2 on a X2).

Winr's right.... these run HOT!

So what is the performance hit from running a single client on a X2 PC as opposed to running 2 cients?

Also, when the time comes to remove the service I just installed, do I just use add/remove programs and remove SoB, or do I have to uninstall the service first... if so how?

winr, i wonder if after the 1st time you rebooted, SOB started working on a new test(0%) instead of picking up on the previous one, then after you next reboots it saved the work like it should of.

Andy, yeah if you don't reboot after installing the service SOB doesn't save the work like it should. After a reboot it will get a new test to run instead of running the previous one.
Login to your account on the SOB site & go to "Pending Test Management" & see if it looks like your 74% done test is there along with the one you're currently working on. If it is you can get it back with the Fix for lost tests

Yes, you will get credit for all work done no matter how many instances you run. I don't know how SOB works with dual core... if it only runs on one core or is spread over both.

Hi Sid!! Welcome to the TAS effort on SoB:)

Yeah. SoB runs significantly hotter than FAH! Few degrees C for core Temps.

I need to upgrade my cooling but so far ok.

SoB looks to be a good stress test for OCing!

Welcome aboard!!!

You can't... it in there forever :D

OK,
From the 'ReadMeNT.txt' in you SOB folder - To uninstall the service, run "sobsvc -u"
There's a bunch of other commands in the too.

Careful with the over clocks when running SOB. It's very sensitive to memory errors apparently.

The double checking effort uncovered this new prime showing once again why it is so important to conduct these re-testing efforts. Most re-tests conclusively verify the original result but if the first test had even a single memory error during the computation, there's a chance a prime could have been missed. That's what likely happened here.

Hi Spacehead.

That is what happened, you called it right.

I remember after reading your post, SOB had not finished a block both times I rebooted, I let it finish a block and it worked fine after that.

It is nice to be on a team with smart people. :sun:

OK, I'll make sure it's still crunching away when they put my dusty PC in the museum!

LOL

(Thanks for the heads-up on the ReadMeNT.txt file with those commands!)

I believe you need the service install to take advantage of multi-core processors in windows.

In linux, I run 4 instances simultaneously from 4 different folders (like fah) so I have 4 terminal windows open and it's quite dynamic! Lots of action compared to fah. No GUI like the Windows version.

seem to have caused a bit of confusion here (not surprised, i was sober when i posted  )

i did have sob installed as a service to run on both cores during the holidays, but i removed that and went back to the ordinary client thingy.

if i have to reboot the pc, i bring up the window, click on the stop button, and then, when it's stopped click on the exit button.

then, after pc has rebooted, it starts again from scratch. not sure if it's running the same test again or not though.

does sob not save intermediate steps of the test it's working on?
