Actually thats not a bad idea. Maybe you should try it. We'll be wondering if we'll hear from you again.

Fred Phelps and his roughly 100 member (almost all of whom are of his own extended family) Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group masquerading as a church for the tax benefits and legal protections. The so-called "church" is his basement. It is not a real church. What Phelps preaches is not Christianity. It is just a hate group ran by a psychopath.

I'm a fundamentalist Christian, and I'd like to apologize for the behavior and attitude of these people you ran into, and the many others like them.

God doesn't hate anybody. We (everybody) are all sinners alike, and Christians especially have no business placing themselves above anybody else. Christ's instructions to his followers was that they should serve, and obviously these people were not serving anybody but themselves. Christians should be showing love to everybody they encounter, regardless of their sins and lifestyle. That's something I fail at myself all the time though too.

God and religion are things we have created as human beings to help ourselves understand our place in the world and to give our lives a sense of purpose. I do believe in God, but I am not so foolish to believe that I know anything about how God works. Nor am I foolish or dumb enough to take the word of some thousand year old myth like the Bible as the only truth there is out there. The Bible was written by men, and thus it is flawed and inaccurate. There are good morals in the stories and I agree that a lot can be learned from it, but too many people take the Bible to be the end-all guide to living your life. I urge you guys to really think about why homosexuality is a sin in your eyes, besides the fact that the Bible says so.

No, I can't prove it. But that's what faith is for. Nothing has blinded me. I can say I have felt the presence of God on several occasions - it's something unexplainable...you have to experience it in order to understand what it is. Becuase of those experiences I know that my faith is true.

We created religion, not God.

The Bible was written through men and I don't believe it to be a myth at all. There have been occasions where people have tried to disprove it with history but it has come up as being very historically accurate and true.

I went to a gay pride march/parade in Lansing last summer. There was a group of supportive Christians there marching with them. They held up signs that said things along the lines of "Good Christians don't judge or promote hatred". Made me feel good inside. Of course there were also Christian groups there protesting. One sign in particular stated "A moral sin can't be a federal right." In regards to gay marriage.

sigh...

Humanity has lunatics too, but I don't judge all of humanity on the lunatics I see on the street. They have been doing that since the seventies and my comment now is the same as my comment then. If he really believed, he would be preaching in Saudi Arabia.

What are you apologizing for? Phelps is no more a Christian than Lenin was a capitalist.

Oh he's Christrian. It's just that he's a very vocal Christian. The others agree that homosexuals are evil and go to hell, but they think they're better because they don't hold picket signs.

I don't know anything about Phelps, so I'm not in a position to comment there.

I won't argue with your remark but I will correct it. "The others agree that EVERYONE is evil and will go to hell but think they're different through no merit of their own but through the grace of a God who is willing to pardon the sins of everybody." Modern day Christians have an (erroneous) tendency to focus on certain sins, particularly homosexuality, and ignore other sins (read: divorce, greed, pride, etc.) but sin is sin and we are all sinners and equal.

Please read the links I posted above your educational convenience. And kindly educate yourself about Christianity as well. Not all Christian denominations are anti-homosexual, and many of them even perform gay marriages. But your mischaracterizations of Christianity aside, I think you should know that to claim that God "hates" any of his creations is about as far from the teachings of Christianity as one can get.

I never said God hated anyone. I simply said certain people are "going to hell" for doing certain things.

And I'll browse the link later, http://www.truechristian.com is my religious gateway.

I didn't say that you had said that God hated anyone. Read again. You said that Phelps is a Christian even though Phelps preaches that "God hates fags." Such preaching is NOT Christianity.

That definitely isn't Christian teaching, but there's no rule that says Christians aren't misled, ignorant or hateful either. Many are, just more evidence of the sinful nature we all share, regardless of our beliefs. Christian != perfect.

Again, I know nothing about Phelps, so my response isn't in regards to him specifically.

The site I linked to, www.godhatesshrimp.com is about a group of people mimicking the "God Hates Fags" people. Basically in the bible there are verses that say shrimp and other non-scaley underwater creatures are abominations (like homosexuals) and that they should never be eaten. Maybe you have to be non-religious to enjoy the satire, but I find it hilarious.

Ah, gotcha. I missed the joke because I didn't click the link. I have a tendency to pick up discussions like this at the bottom of the thread when the thread gets long, and only discuss with the people who are present, rather than the people who already signed off. 🙂

That's just part of the Jewish dietary laws, like not eating pork. It doesn't say that shrimp are abominations, it says that eating them is an abomination. Hence, shrimp != kosher. It's for health reasons.
Strangely enough, the Jewish laws against homosexuality were for similar reasons. Antibiotics didn't exist 3,000 years ago.

Which bible are Leviticus and Deuteronomy in? That's what that site quotes the verses from. It's interesting that it would be linked to physical health.
From my non-religious viewpoint it makes as much sense to follow this shellfish rule as any other.

The Old Testament. Specifically they are part of the Torah, or the first 5 books of the Bible that are the core of Judaism.
