You can, but it's kind of a pain in the but. They try to get you to send this thing called "shortmail" which isn't as easy to use.

If one of you is in a room where it would be really rude to talk on your cell phone, text messages are very useful. They're also good for the short "hey, we're meeting at xxx" stuff.

Someone told me that Sprint how has "real" SMS... is that true now? Not having true SMS is the reason I left Sprint to begin with, but if they have it now then I might switch back. Being able to keep the same phone number and also having the 7PM plan would probably bring me back...

Only certain new phones have the SMS capabilities. Sprint is still working on getting the system up and running to. Unfortunately, they won't have software upgrades for all phones so they can have SMS. :frown:

Ah, yeah that's what I figured... Sprint's website is also pretty vague about the whole thing. I suppose when they have full SMS support they'll have s new ad campaign to go with it.

I just cancelled my account with them, because their service is so slow. Half the time, I will be sitting somewhere, and go from local to roaming without even moving. Their shortmail takes so long to send, and alot of the times I get a page error instead of the message being sent. 60 bucks a month for service that sucks, I can get that a lot cheaper somewhere else. ;)

They have been having some data network problems as of late... phones still work fine as phones, but some odd things.

with their new SMS you need a new phone... sprint's current phones cannot do SMS. and yes they do support full SMS, but I think it's limited in most areas

Do you have a link to support that information? IE what phones support it or will support it and in what coverage areas is SMS already in place?

You should have asked here first. I HATE Sprint and the lack of real SMS was one of the many reasons I switched to T-Mobile.

TMO + SE T610 + T9 = SMS at its best.

Edit: Whoops, didn't know I already posted in this thread :D

I switched to T-Mobile myself 1.5 years ago,

TMO + SE T68i + T9 = SMS heaven ;)

I was just hoping that Sprint would eventually get it right, but it appears they aren't quite there yet...

EDIT: LOL, yeah I had posted earlier in the thread :) I think maybe I'll just a T630 or something and satisfy my "need new phone" urge...

Sprint's network supports real text messaging. That's not the problem. I've been sending and receiving texts for the past year with a friend of mine who uses Virgin Mobile (a Sprint reseller in the US). Sprint's mobile network processes them flawlessly every time. It's just that up until recently, Sprint has refused to give up on their proprietary messaging system. I think they liked it because before unlimited vision plans/phones came out, it cost the customer "web-minutes" to compose and read messages.

Some of Sprint's phones are now being released with software that supports the true text messaging that the rest of us are familiar with. I think all the vision phones still require you to use Sprint's short-mail service though (I could be wrong--it's been a little while since I've updated myself on Sprint's woefully transparent shenanigans).

Sprint IS implementing MO-SMS (SMS directly from the handset). That's why Vision has been screwy lately. If you goto the website and log-in you'll find that under online tools you can no longer find your shortmail inbox and right now you can't even message people when you're logged in. Current phones that support SMS include the Treo 600, Sanyo VM4500, Nokia 3588i, and Samsung Vi660. I don't know for sure if the other two RL phones support MO-SMS. I know that no upgrades will be offered to enable this functionality on other phones. The service has already gone live in some markets (tho only partly functional) and is expected to go live beginning of February. Those people with the phones I mentioned who currently have Vision will be grandfathered in with unliminted free SMS while those who get SMS capable phones after launch will pay extra for it (it will be a seperate option from Vision). Hope this helps

Its not really. Cruz kinda sorta verified this but besides, the fact its going live in some areas and the website is down does mean something.

EDIT: Some CSRs are adding the SMS option for people so it is in the system.
