it is catchy in a way that saying "i mean" or "you know" is catchy and is an easily used crutch when having to publicly speak if you are not a natural speaker.

I have problems with "you know?". My wife points it out all the time to me.

But she uses "like" way to often, so w/e, you know?

Pretentious OPs ridiculing others' grammar are usually rendered ineffective when riddled with grammatical errors.

So, would you rather me start with "well well well..."?

And that bonym noob, clean up your damn wall-o-text first before attempting at correcting English. That crap gave me headache just looking at it.

After reading this thread, I decided to kick the habit by replacing the word and it's meaning with "pause" as they are pretty much one and the same.

Me: Pause... what did you have for lunch?
Co-worker: /awkward stare

In light of the undesired result in the conversation, I have decided to switch back... Thanks

I think I'm going to start leading off my sentences with "So..." now.

I don't, currently, but I find myself having to repeat myself pretty often because of it.

"So" is intended to buy time. Time allows us to prepare for an ultimate stance of dominance.

It's to reinforce that we know something you don't. /stance of dominance

So, let me explain this, since you don't understand.

Anyone who is actually familiar with the intent and applicability of the stance of dominance would not make such noob-ish errors. Stance of dominance does not apply here.

So much fail.

4 years later and people are still doing this. Every single radio interview with somebody in tech or academia is full of "So,"

Do they not notice they're doing it?

So, because of that, you felt the need to necro this thread.

If something so trivial pisses you off, your life must be non-stop anguish.

What's important is that their communication is being understood, not that they adhere to all English grammar laws and/or suggestions.

We all naturally like to soften our language, to make it seem like a more natural flow without rigid structure.

That is especially true when we are not trying to draft up incredibly formal content or have something published. If you're like me, you more often enter into a "stream of consciousness" approach to writing/speaking, as opposed to piecing together an eloquent structure with a harmonious and coherent flow between every word from start to finish.

Granted, I haven't spent 30 years in the most prestigious academic institutions or surrounded by individuals from the same; thus, I haven't bothered to whip my natural train of thought into grammatically perfect prose.

That, or I'm just too lazy and impatient to try and train my brain like that.

If I'm trying to compose something formal, I usually need to either slow down a lot, or edit a fair bit. When I post here, for instance, I don't stop all that often to recompose.
