They are never going to lower them. I am probably going to buy one eventually because I have been buying stuff off iTunes recently but they charge a fortune for space so I will be buying a 10gig one if any. I am sure they are making a lot of money off these because the hard drive mechanism costs a lot, not the disk. A 40gig disk probably only costs 20 more dollars than a 10gig but Apple charges $200 more.

I keep telling people, Rio Karma is the best deal out there right now. Reviewers agree, it's the #1 iPod rival right now, even though you hardly hear anything about it. You can probably pick up a 20GB for $250, it's small (but a bit thick) about the same proportion as your average MD player, has an EXCELLENT GUI, great sound quality, the dock rocks (ethernet connectivity!), super easy one-handed controls, WMA, Ogg & FLAC support, 14 hour battery life (playing Oggs cuts this down significantly, though :() and there are tons of people working on open source projects with it. Unfortunately, it isn't as cool looking as the iPod, but it's not as bad as, say, the Zen.

If you want WMA support, lots of players do.

WMA is suck. AAC is where it is at.

I agree the iPod is great BUT what if you want built in radio, ogg or wma support, or something cheaper, or something with better battery life?
Your arguments are very articulate dartworth, you should become a lawyer! Your skills are wasting away here.

I didn't realize one must articulate in this forum. The iPod is superior in every way.

Well, I should say it is the best player for my needs. Being both a mac and pc user. The iPod has over a 50% market share for a reason.

I frequent the iTunes store often which is one of the reasons I bought an iPod. Having over 20GB in music, iTunes makes it very easy to organize and listen to music when I'm on the road. Why buy an imitation when you can have the best.

I will give the suggestion of being a lawyer some thought. Thanks for the advice.

so far, apple doesn't have any reason to cut cost.

IPOD is still cream of the crop as far as portable mp3 players go.

So far it's the cream of the crop. But if you look at all the new hdd players coming out with MORE features and better quality, at an even lower price it's inevitable that they have to drop the price.

Yup and I'd agree. But the 'design' of the newer mp3 players have to be GOOD. I just say copy the dam thing, make it smaller and add an incline remote with a screen and a decent clip. Bettery battery life or at least you can change it easily. Then I am on board :D. I don't care what brand as long as it looks 'good'.

I had a 2nd gen 20Gb iPod. Thought it was cool then used it for a while then couldn't live with the size and bulk of it personally. Remote sucked for me going from MD with a sweet remote. Now back on MD and waiting for a mp3 player I like.

Koing

I agree.

People still buy them even though there's fierce competition out now. They might sell more but they'd have lower profit margins. It's just a simple cost/benefit analysis. I'd be willing to bet they'd make a lot more money selling at a higher price with higher profits than selling more IPODs at a lower price with lower profits.

Apple also has the name recognition working for them. You hear HD based MP3 player, or sometimes even MP3 player, and most people instantly think IPOD.

There we go. Apple can point and laugh at it's competitors until someone viable actually comes along and knocks them off.

You can use the Karma on any OS with TCP/IP and a Java interpreter. :p

Wait for the Macworld Expo if you're going to buy an ipod. Rumors of mini-ipods and possibly a 4th gen ipod.
