Look at all the competition

Rio, Creative, samsung, philips, dell, gateway, iRiver

And it's only a matter of time until Sony and Microsoft get in the mix.

edit:
most of the other players offer WMA support, have built-in radios, better EQ's (something which the iPod sucks at), etc.

edit2;
I see other people are asking the same question:

edit3:
soooooo...... mini-ipods at mac expo
also:
Newsweek posts a short interview with Steve Jobs about the new iTunes Music Store for Windows.

The interview touches on Apple vs. Microsoft, as well as the frequent topic of a cheaper iPod:

Q: Some think you wouldn?t want to sell a $100 iPod because the profit margin would be so low.

Jobs: What are you talking about? We?d love to have a $100 iPod! We just don?t know how to do it right now. We?re constantly trying to make cheaper iPods. We?re working on the next step.

So more people can buy it?

exactly... their competition is undercutting them, if they want to stay ahead of the game they'll have to change their price point.

The number 1 (or 2) complaint that people have against apple products is that they're too expensive, I guess apple will never change their philosophy.

and FYI, I already have one.

Ok, and Buick is undercutting BMW. Do you think BMW really cares?

I guess that would be a good analogy if the mp3 player market was as expansive as the automobile market.

Exactly! Dell is undercutting them for laptop costs vs features. If you want it you're going to have to pay the premium

so far, apple doesn't have any reason to cut cost.

IPOD is still cream of the crop as far as portable mp3 players go.

So far it's the cream of the crop. But if you look at all the new hdd players coming out with MORE features and better quality, at an even lower price it's inevitable that they have to drop the price.

Yup and I'd agree. But the 'design' of the newer mp3 players have to be GOOD. I just say copy the dam thing, make it smaller and add an incline remote with a screen and a decent clip. Bettery battery life or at least you can change it easily. Then I am on board :D. I don't care what brand as long as it looks 'good'.

I had a 2nd gen 20Gb iPod. Thought it was cool then used it for a while then couldn't live with the size and bulk of it personally. Remote sucked for me going from MD with a sweet remote. Now back on MD and waiting for a mp3 player I like.

Well, I was on the train with my antique 2nd gen ipod and noticed someone who had one of those new Zens.. I figured out why apple is still ahead of the game - the design of the zen/iriver's player/etc. etc. is very much made for geeks to enjoy - brushed steel/black on silver/etc. etc. etc.. Very tech person inspired color schemes and designs.. The ipod, on the other hand, is simply unique and elegant.. Small, white plastic on silver- very chic and something that even a 17 year old girl could like..

they don't have to lower their prices as long as they are top dog.

their player is the smallest, lightest, most user friendly harddrive player. it just reaches the size threshhold where putting it in your pocket is no big deal, you barely notice. build quality is also great.

if you buy a zen you get more harddrive space at the cost of the huge player and lousier interface. sticking it in your pocket is liike trying to push a cassettte walkman into your pocket, possible, but your not going to forget its there, its less the convenient. you don't even get a fm tuner to make up for the huge size.

same goes for the rest basically. they get by with larger harddrive space but have deficits that make them not really worth buying in my opinion.

seems the competition focuses on more harddrive space since shrinking size and competing directly against ipod would be futile at this point.

I doubt Apple will lower the price, but they will increase storage and/or add features. And once the new iPods come out the previous model's price will drop so just pick one up then.

Lethal

EDIT: w/all the reviews I've read the Ipod still wins in the most important catagory, IMO, and that is the interface. I have over 3k songs and I want an interface that allows me to quickly and easily go thru them. If the interface is a PITA I'm not gonna like using the device meaning it will spend lots of time on my self.

I doubt they will lower the price, they will just introduce a new model, then ax the lowest model and adjust the price accordingly

The iPod's GUI is so much better than any other mp3 player's GUI. I remember playing with my friend's Zen for about half an hour, and still had problems figuring out how to queue up all those songs, delete them off the playlist, play a certain song. With the iPod's 4 buttons anybody can pick it up and use it within 5 minutes.
