From the many posts around the 'net, here's what you need to avoid being seen as a hick.

1: Watching NASCAR.
2: Knowing how to work on your car.
3: Doing your own yard work.
4: Enjoying drag racing and knowing what it takes.
5: Wanting a Camero.
6: Owning a truck that actually gets used.
7: Not liking a truck that can't actually be used.
8: Hunting.
9: Being able to handle the slaughtering process without becoming a vegetarian.
10: Being able to raise an animal and be okay when it dies (often part of #9).
11: Wanting to turn the PC off and walk away on occasions.
12: Enjoying off road vehicles.
13: Having a sport utility that can actually be taken off road without someone worrying.

Personally, I'd rather be seen as a redneck hick than a yuppie that does nothing but collect debt and can't do anything themselves. Often it's the biggest hicks that are the most polite. The biggest hicks are the ones that don't come to a complete stop on a mountain road. The biggest hicks are the ones that can tow a trailer both forwards AND backwards. Yuppies are so concerned about thier self image from an appearance stand point that they forget that anything else exists.

I don't care if you or anybody else is a hick/redneck except when they espouse racial hatred and live up to the stereotype. Other than that do what you wanna do. But those types I would love to put in the gas chamber.

I am guilty of eight of those. What do I win?:)

Does actually owning a Camaro get me two points?

lots of people not 'hicks' espouse racial hatred, so your anger isn't very well directed

As for the other ones, I know "yuppies" that do those things all the time. Just shut up.

rednecks and hicks are one of the few social/cultural/racial groups that is still politically correct to poke fun at. Every other groups is off-limits now.

Pretty much.

I personally have a lot of it in me, I grew up in the country. I have nothing but respect for most of the people in the surrounding community. Some of the nicest, hardest working, most honest people you'll ever meet.

Granted this was Forest Grove, OR, more of a farm community than "hick."

What about when your father comes out of your bedroom and says:
"Son, she's still a Virgin Take HER BACK!!. IF she ain't good enough for her family, she surely aint good enough for ours."

I'm pretty far from what I would consider a "hick" and I participate in:

#2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 personally. And many of the others are activities some of my family members partake in and none of them are "hicks" either. I think it has to do with your background/education/attitude/vocabulary/personality rather than the activities.

I don't think anything you posted there has much at all to do with being a hick. My definition of a hick (sorry if it offends anyone): the drunken trailer trash you see 95% of the time on the TV show Cops. Basically a hick is someone who doesn't care about how others judge him/her and thus does very little personal maintanence (showers, shaving, nice clothes, nice possessions, etc.) Using my definition, it should be obvious why people want to avoid that situation.

What you listed is related (as many hicks do those 13 things), but those 13 things are not the cause of being a hick. Many, many yuppies do all 13 as well. Well maybe with the exception of #3.

So if none of those things are associated with being a hick, how come there hasn't been one single NASCAR thread that hasn't had a post (often MANY posts) about NASCAR fans being hicks?

It's interesting that you think you've associated yourself with them, especially since Orego is about as far away from the South as you can get. And yes, I am saying that when people think of hicks, they think of the southern belt states. I would not consider a farming community in rural Oregon (LOL) as one that would include hicks.

1: Watching NASCAR.
Don't like Nascar...I'd rather watch formula one races.

2: Knowing how to work on your car.
Know a few thngs here and there...I'd like to learn more.

3: Doing your own yard work.
Definitely

4: Enjoying drag racing and knowing what it takes.
Yep

5: Wanting a Camero.
I'd love a 69 Z28 with dual 4 bbl and 4.11 out back, maybe a 70 Z/28 RS with that oh so tasty split front bumper. :D Otherwise a current camaro with SS package isn't that bad either

6: Owning a truck that actually gets used.
yep

7: Not liking a truck that can't actually be used.
yep

8: Hunting.
would like to

9: Being able to handle the slaughtering process without becoming a vegetarian.
Helped my Dad raise rabbits and chickens in the backyard and slaughter them too when I was a kid. I even helped my uncle gut and clean a 550 pound pig.

10: Being able to raise an animal and be okay when it dies (often part of #9).
Food animals we didn't get attached to, but pets are a different story.

11: Wanting to turn the PC off and walk away on occasions.
Lol...I need to do this more often.

12: Enjoying off road vehicles.
yep

13: Having a sport utility that can actually be taken off road without someone worrying.
ehhh...my explorer is bone stock. I don't know how well I could take some trails....I'd rather let my buddies sink their cash into lifting and raising their trucks and ride with them on the trails :p

It takes alot more to be a hick...your list basically describes a self sufficient person who likes cars/trucks/off roading.

The styling is ok...but the engines in that era were mediocre at best. The L98 V8 started to recoup some of the lost power, and then after them came the 4rt gen Camaros with the new LT1 and LS1 V8s. I may be off on this fact but back then, the only engines you could get stick was the 305s...the 350s were only auto.

Who cares? The last thing I care about in a relationship is the government recognizing it. As long as my God and my wife recognize it, that's all I care about.

This gay marriage thing is just an excuse for another "oppressed minority group" to complain.
