I know I know, its America's fault

i have wondered many times as well about the salary question you posed. We have some fvuked up priorities when entertainers make 100x more than people who work hard to make a real difference for mankind. But that's the way this society is and nothing you or I can do to change that.

and another thing, you're preaching to the wrong crowd. Your point, albeit valid, will never get through to anyone here. Most here know nothing about living conditions in third world countries let alone have first hand experience with it. Some may know about it, but have no first hand experience with it. And unless you've seen how rough life is in other countries, you really cant appreciate fully all life has to offer here

you either work to benefit mankind, or you work for money.

translation:
you either are a saint, or a selfish bastage.

/thread

i'm sorry, 99% of teachers do not "benefit mankind." neither do 99% of nasa scientists.

if someone truly benefits mankind, that person will make a shvtload of money.

let me give you an example. you know those dots on the street/freeway/highway that make loud thumping noises to tell you that you've crossed the lane? they're called bott's dots. it's the most important highway invention of our time. it has saved countless lives. i have even been saved by it; i fell asleep on the road once and the loud thumping woke me up.

the dots are called bott's dots because the inventor named it. he earns half a penny royalty for each dot on the street. i'm pretty sure he's well off. benefitted mankind and is a millionaire because of it.

there are countless other examples.

i don't think it's too hard to follow cookie cutter curriculum teacher guides. of course a "good" teacher is rare. but i still maintain anyone who can get a job in the real world can be a teacher.

True, anyone can get a job as a teacher, but it takes a special person to be a good teacher. My wife is an english teacher, and she is one of the good ones. She is very dedicated to her students, and is constantly looking for ways to improve their education and their learning experience. She spends 2-3K a year of our money to buy supplies, teaching aids, etc for her kids. She works long hours after school at home grading, developing interesting lessons, etc. Yet, she gets paid the same as some dipsh!t who doesn't give a crap that reads a couple of things out of a book and calls it a "lesson."

I'm surprised people skipped these.

I'm personally very happy to find that you're taking the top 10% of a foreign society and comparing it to the bottom 10% of American society in both cases. There are countless people in the US that are taking out loans for their kids to go to school and countless people that make it into medicine and engineering. There are also countless Indians that don't care about school and countless Vietnamese families that aren't taking out loans to send their kids to school.

The logic used in this argument is some of the most idiotic I've ever seen.

Dude, Soviet Russia fell....

NASA Scientist = does not generate wealth, is a cost to society

Katie Couric = creates wealth, people watch her dumb show, hires producers, cameramen, makeup people, writers, reporters, all the way down to janitors so her face is on TV.

That is just so friggin Wrong.....

Scientists create new technologies which create MANY jobs for those in the business of profiting from technology. A scientists value to American society is so much more than that of a news anchor or whatever the hell Katie Couric does. If it weren't for scientists, we wouldnt have our pharmaceutical, aerospace, computer... etc etc industries that make our country the strongest economically in the world.

In addition Scientists can be teachers and share their knowledge with others.

Scientists DESERVE to be paid more based on their value to society.

What's Katie's value to society?

A scientist doesn't do jack shvt. A proprietor who takes risks to pay a group of scientists under an entity called a "corporation" creates the tecnologies. If it weren't for entrepreneurs, we wouldn't have our pharmaceutical, aerospace computer...etc etc industries that make our country the strongest economically in the world.

wtf is this "deserve" shvt. you "deserve" what the market says you "deserve" and in turn accept.

If teachers were paid far more, the only people doing it would be the ones who could do it well. or rather the competition for the jobs would create a higher standard to which people would strive with the current setup, many unqualified people just walk into the job.

Studies have shown "if teachers were paid far more" it would just attract even MORE unqualified idiots. Go to college first, then debate on sociological and economic issues.

value to society is nice but that does not pay the bills.

value to shareholders is what counts. katie's value is high (why? i have no clue i sure wouldnt pay her even hafl that) and the value of a scientist while high is not even close.

By value to society I meant in quantitative(monetary) terms as well as qualitative.

Think of some of the biggest American corporations.... Intel, Boeing, Microsoft, Phizer...... These companies would not EXIST without the scientific innovations as the driving force behind their products. Therefore, scientists create the products which create shareholder value. The leading scientists of these respective companies create Billions in value for their company.

Does Katie Couric mean that much in monetary terms? No because if she died tommorow they would just replace her with someone else. Heck they'd even save money and NBC's stock wouldnt go down one bit.

yeap just paying more is not going to do it. The system needs a overhaul. I also think we should do away with some of the "standardized test" right now teachers teach the test at the expense of other more important stuff.

You are comparing large teams of scientists to one person.

Katia Curic is probably responsible for generating ~$50million a year in ad revenue.

A single scientist isnt generating any where near $50million.

Oh and she works on CBS, not NBC.

You are comparing large teams of scientists to one person.

Katia Curic is probably responsible for generating ~$50million a year in ad revenue.

A single scientist isnt generating any where near $50million.

heh and thats the point i was trying (and failing by the sounds of it) to get across.

katie is worht far more to shareholders then one scientist. you can replace the scientist and not miss a beat (on avarage that is). but you lose Katie it will hurt the company (for a short time).

personlly we can't do without scientist but we can without katie.

Are we doomed !!! ???

i have wondered many times as well about the salary question you posed.

Botts didnt earn anything. Get your facts and your logic straight.

http://www.snopes.com/business/origins/bottsdots.asp

yea i know it's a myth. my econ professor told us that story we were all amazed then it said bott didn't get jack shvt lol. shoulda figured one of you would look it up.

What's Katie's value to society?

value to society is nice but that does not pay the bills.

value to shareholders is what counts. katie's value is high (why? i have no clue i sure wouldnt pay her even hafl that) and the value of a scientist while high is not even close.

Oh and she works on CBS, not NBC.

A leading scientist who creates a drug that reduces the chances of one getting cancer will earn more than 50 million in revenue for a company like phizer.

But your right and I was wrong about Katie Couric not being related to shareholder value.

Edit: Top level scientists are just as irreplaceable. Think of guys like Einstein.

I just can't imagine walking without air conditioning. Those kids have it tough in India.

Nice catch :) ... I meant to say ... "get to a school that has no air conditioning". You would make a fine english teacher :)

Yes however its easier to plug in another scientist, than it would be to plug in another Katie.

the world wouldn't stop without football, but it would without teachers and engineers and doctors (although they make a lot)

teacher = anyone can do it, and people don't give a fvck about them

athlete = not anyone can do it, and people want to watch them

i disagree with the teacher part. while they are accepting many crapy teachers it still takes a person who wants to be around kis (and able to put with the bs). Not anyone can do it.

i don't think it's too hard to follow cookie cutter curriculum teacher guides. of course a "good" teacher is rare. but i still maintain anyone who can get a job in the real world can be a teacher.

Yet, she gets paid the same as some dipsh!t who doesn't give a crap that reads a couple of things out of a book and calls it a "lesson."

in turn we pay her a shvt salary, full medical benefits for you and her, job security, a cush ass retirement plan...wtf more does she "deserve"?

For starters, how about getting reimbursed for the money she spends out her own pocket buying things the school should be paying for? I can bet if you spent 2-3K a year of your own money buying stuff for your job, you'd expect to be paid back.

man that sux she has to spend out of pocket money. i would definitely not be against firing some worthless administrators (what is it like 1:1 ratio? ) to put into supplies.

you should be blaming the government workers unions for bloating up the payroll so no money goes to supplies.

medical benifits are not great. job security? only if you get tenure.

also in many areas teachers are required to continue to take classes (wich they should) not to mention the hours they put in and extra stuff they have to purchase for the class etc.

yeah retirement is ok.
