the world wouldn't stop without football, but it would without teachers and engineers and doctors (although they make a lot)
teacher = anyone can do it, and people don't give a fvck about them
athlete = not anyone can do it, and people want to watch them

Please don't include teachers in that group. Doctors and Engineers maybe. Most K-12 teachers are complete sh!t. They deserve what they make, 30k a year. Nothing more, cause they don't do crap. University teachers aren't often a whole lot better. There are some good ones, but some REALLY bad ones too. Just depends.
A professional athlete should without a doubt make more than a K-12 teacher, as its a MUCH MUCH more difficult career.

Our wealth has played a part in people's psyche as well. People in other countries are determined to raise themselves and their countries up - many of us feel that our country is already at the top.
People in other countries are used to hardship, so working extra harder is not as hard to them as it is to us. I doubt most people in America can go to a forest and learn to survive there for a while. I doubt most Americans know anything about farming, starting a fire - you know, the basic things that people should know. I'll be honest, I don't know stuff like this either, but my excuse is that I was raised in America.
I agree that Katie Couric makes way more than scientists etc, but there is a reason for that. Millions of people don't watch scientists lecture. They watch tv shows, like Katie Couric's.
I find it very ironic (maybe that isn't the correct term) that countries such as India, China and others are trying to be more Westernized (mainly America and UK). They probably think how rosy things are over here, and for the most part, they are.

- We have the cops on COPS chastising us about violence and crime yet we have the same Fox channel, during the commercial breaks, showing very graphic ads for SAINTS ROW on XBox ... enticing viewers to purchase this violent game. Hypocrisy?
- There are families in Vietnam taking loans to send their kids to learn soldering ... yet there are families in the US buying $150 sneakers for their kids ... and maxing their credit cards ... @ 15.5% APR no less ! Brain In the Drain ?
- There are kids in India who walk miles to get to a school with no air conditioning and yet make it to medicine and engineering ... yet we have kids in the US that view school as a social playground for dates ... and the occasional shootouts !

i disagree with the teacher part. while they are accepting many crapy teachers it still takes a person who wants to be around kis (and able to put with the bs). Not anyone can do it.

So you think its OK for bimbos and airheads and jocks to make millions to entertain us yet people that can move us ahead are given chicken feed?
freaking sports stars, movie stars, and all this BS giving people 20 mil to be on TV for looking good is rediclous... I'm tired of it myself this country is so backward assed its not even funny.
then we got the corrupt ass incompetant government who are all criminals and conmen just waiting to get caught.. not to mention hypocrites like this latest scumball to get caught.. pass laws and prosecute people for the same crimes you are guilty of..
man what a world..

there is a reason we have so many ****** tgeaches. 30k a year is crap pay for the education they need. If we actually paid a teacher what they should be we would get better skilled teachers.
if you think a k-12 teacher does crap you are badly mistaken.

i have wondered many times as well about the salary question you posed. We have some fvuked up priorities when entertainers make 100x more than people who work hard to make a real difference for mankind. But that's the way this society is and nothing you or I can do to change that.
and another thing, you're preaching to the wrong crowd. Your point, albeit valid, will never get through to anyone here. Most here know nothing about living conditions in third world countries let alone have first hand experience with it. Some may know about it, but have no first hand experience with it. And unless you've seen how rough life is in other countries, you really cant appreciate fully all life has to offer here

What do you suggest we pay them? And how do you suggest we go about moving to that pay scale? Just give ALL teachers a raise? Cause there are a LOT of teachers that are not worth a dime over 30k.
There are kids in India who walk miles to get to a school with no air conditioning

Pay all 30k? hell no i agree there are some very bad teachers. i have had my share of them. But i have also had some that were outstanding.
i think the reason we get so many bad teachers is because we pay so little. the people with the skills go elsewhere to get better pay.
I would love to see teachers get paid far better. But they also need to redo the whole system.
do i know how to fix it? if i did i would be makeing a LOT of money. but i do know it needs to be fixed.

Dude, Soviet Russia fell....
NASA Scientist = does not generate wealth, is a cost to society
Katie Couric = creates wealth, people watch her dumb show, hires producers, cameramen, makeup people, writers, reporters, all the way down to janitors so her face is on TV.

That is just so friggin Wrong.....
Scientists create new technologies which create MANY jobs for those in the business of profiting from technology. A scientists value to American society is so much more than that of a news anchor or whatever the hell Katie Couric does. If it weren't for scientists, we wouldnt have our pharmaceutical, aerospace, computer... etc etc industries that make our country the strongest economically in the world.
In addition Scientists can be teachers and share their knowledge with others.
Scientists DESERVE to be paid more based on their value to society.
What's Katie's value to society?
