So what's the new solution for carbon copies?

In nearly all of the businesses I've worked for in the past 5 years, they have dot-matrix printers to punch through the paper for carbon copies. Why is this? Isn't there a newer system that doesn't require ancient dot-matrix printers? Or are there better dot-matrix printers out now and everyone is just using the old ones for fun?

The problem is they probably have a store room full of the carbon paper forms that will last for 20 years.

Yeah, but when you're talking about printing a 20 page report on 5-ply NCR paper that are all different colors, and you print 100 of these a day, making sure the stack of paper doesn't get out of order would be a real PITA

We just setup a PO printing system to do that here where I work....LAST YEAR!

Personally, I think it's moronic. There has to be a laser based method of doing this.

The real question is: Why do we still need *licate hardcopies of documents in the 21st century?

Save a digital copy and print only what is needed - if it is needed. Problem solved and MUCH less expensive than even a dot matrix and carbon paper.

By the way, there are a lot of companies both big and small that rely on the trusty old dot matrix.

Because back in the early 80's they bought enough reams of the carbon paper to last them 'til 2079.

Plus, secertaries are notiourously neo-luddites. If they could be, they'd still be using WP5.1 and their 286s.

Sarbanes-Oxley, document/audit trail, plus cost. Digital solutions >>>>> multiple printed laser>> dot matrix in regards to cost. Even with cheaper higher speed printers.

just use the laser "carbon copy" paper and you're all set.

the biggest reason to have the copies is to maintain the signature and stamping.

Which is a perfect combination for word processing. Just add cc:mail and they'd be set.

Nothing is cheaper than dot-matrix, and nothing runs as reliably. And for precision placement, it's also the best because of the tractor feed.

A typewriter is still useful many times as well.

Circuit City uses them. They are constantly fouling up, or sucking long printouts back into them and that just destroys the whole thing.

You'd think an electronics store would have decent printers . . . .
