No, but I don't want to see IRQ #'s because I have no idea on them. I don't think it will be an issue, but questions like IRQ #'s would be.
 
I'm not sure I could pass one without studying. How the fuck do I know what the default memory address for COM2 is? Every system I've owned in the last 5 years has had the COM ports disabled on first boot.

It's relevance these days is highly questionable, but I've seen people trying for a few jobs recently where it was required.

I don't know all the IRQ #s off the top of my head, either. I suppose I could cram for them, but... that's like actual studying. 😛

I passed my A+ test a couple years back. About 5 years ago the test was super easy, then they made it more difficult, then involved a new test this year I believe which was supposed to be slightly harder. Really if you've worked tech support for any length of time you'll automatically know about half the questions. Best bet is to do the transcender or test king test before hand and figure out what areas you are weak in, study those areas, then retake it until you score 90 % on the test exams. Once you do, take the real exam and you'll pass with flying colors. The actual hard part of the test isn't the technical items they are asking about, it's avoiding the wordplay they use in order to try and trick you to picking the wrong answer.

this says the last update was in 2006

but it likely still covers old shit nobody really deals with. IRQs and DMA? i cant recall the last time i had to even look at those settings, and the last time i know i *had* to troubleshoot any of them was years ago on a windows 98 box.

 
I thought about taking some classes for this at a local college a few months back. However, it's probably not in my best interest to mix work and play. Right now, I'd rather study for LSATs.
 
Well on one of the practice stuff it seems like it consists of a lot of printer questions and older tech (like Pentium 1 shit) and not too much modern stuff.

Yeah, no kidding. I was skimming through one of the newer "study books" at the bookstore---they expect you to know stuff like the dimensions and pin numbers of stuff like SIMMs and early DIMMs. And there were whole charts of speeds, sockets, pins, and voltages of pre-Pentium II chips. Do I seriously need to know these numbers off the top of my head? 😕
 
I did this exam in 2001 - it was even old tech questions back then. Like old dos commands and really old hardware. I guess it's ok as a first up cert, but don't think you're going to get any decent job with it.

I found Network+ to be a lot more useful and also more difficult.
 
Yeah when I was in a CCNA program at my high school (first four semesters), I competed in what was basically A+ competitions. I went to nationals my junior year for a multiple choice A+ like test, and senior year I did a different company's test and went to States. One, I started giving up on going into the computer/networking field for a career, as I hated the idea of working with computers and being bored to tears and end up hating computers, and two... well the questions are freaking ridiculous and have no relevance in modern computing.
And yeah, all the A+ stuff we learned on the side so we can take the A+ test, was all the same irrelevant crap, and what sucked is that I never took the test, and basically so many of the computer shops around town had basically wanted either people with experience from other shops, or certs like the A+. So sad... maybe they'll update the A+ but I'm pretty sure they have yet to do so.
