We all know how badly AMD needed a killer product to stay competitive.

Barcelona seems somewhat promising on the server front, which is supposdely where money is at. But still, the desktop is far from stellar at this point (though we will have to see what kind of change faster memory+new chipset/bios+higher speed would bring), and what concerns me the most is the cost of manufacturing, crippling AMD further in the price war against intel.

While I would much rather have AMD alive and kicking, we cant completely rule out the very real chance of AMD not making it past this product cycle. Should that ever happen, I dont think it would be the end of the competition in the CPU segment. There has to be someone that is willing and able to take over all that technology and infrastructure. What would be the most likely firm to merge with (or buy out) AMD? Which company would make the most fierce competitor to intel? Cast your vote and share your ideas here :)

What if the Chinese government bought AMD? Wasn't there a story a few months ago about how they were trying to get into the X86 CPU market?

All of those seem rather unlikely. I'll put forth another name: Freescale. They're roughly around the same size as AMD currently, and they're operating in the black.

With Intel or Nvidia, you'd have the powers-that-be freaking out about a possible CPU/GPU monopoly.

From what I have read + heard, Freescale's position isn't too bright looking forward, particularly with their struggles in the wireless sector. http://www.bloggingstocks.com/...ill-trying-to-recover/

yeah, how did samsung get left off this list? they have to be one of the top names on the short list of "potential amd buyers". even more likely? private equity firm, maybe KKR since blackstone just got into this sector with freescale. Or, alternatively, if amd is still a decent company then maybe richard can convince BLACKSTONE to purchase them. Freescale is unlikely to buy anybody since blackstone owns them.

From what I know of SUN and AMD I would expect SUN to buy AMD before anyone else on the planet IF AMD were ever to be purchased.

Now that Intel has broken ground on their fab in China, it gives the Chinese government more incentive to buy AMD. Once Intel finishes the fab, the Chinese government will commandeer it and start production of AMD CPUs.

AMD would ask the US Govt. to help bail them out, like Chrysler did back in the 1980's.

Samsung and IBM are the only ones that have been looking at AMD.

Both of them have far better managment, so i think either of them could pick up the ball and run with it.
