What is your typical day like? Like it? Hate it?

Me --> student who doesn't know what to major in, currently in electrical engineering.

Military. Can't really say what.

Enjoy it, really fits my lifestyle and it's an attractive career. Plus, how many people can say they make $38k/year plus full benefits, pension, etc. at 21 years old.

Electronics engineer

- Brainstorm/sketch/sim circuit designs (very fun)

- Build and test said circuit designs (very fun)

- Code up embedded systems (fun)

- Write validation test documents (not too fun)

- Write design requirements documents (usually fun)

- Debug embedded system hardware/software (supremely aggravating but ultimately rewarding)

- Worry that my new design will croak from some obscure failure mode after 100,000 units have been in the field for 20 years (not so fun)

- Play with fun gizmos and gadgets and get paid: priceless!

🙂

Right now, I fix things for a small company, usually equipment older than me. Servo amps seem to come up a lot.

My college time was for mechanical engineering, but most of this work I do is electrical. I draw on experience gained from screwing around with electronic stuff at home. I'm by no means advanced, but I can tell a bridge rectifier from a flux capacitor. 😛

The pay is not exactly grand or anything, but it's more than I've ever made before, and the company(ies) is a nice one. The owner is a great guy who does genuinely care about his employees. One you're on the payroll long enough, the benefits do of course start, including fully-paid health insurance.
