I am aware of all that, but im sure they could have backported it as ive seen community made patches to get DX 10 on XP so if non MS programmers laking the source code can make it happen then you are never going to convince me MS themselves cant do it. Of course MS wont do it though, then no one would upgrade to vista/7. MS has a habit of forcing upgrades due to stopping DX support, and for me since i use windows for gaming only this has made me VERY bitter towards them.

That's unrealistic. That's like expecting GM to upgrade your 72 Chevelle to antilock brakes, and airbags. Just because it /can/ be done, doesn't mean their obligated to, or even should. The community port was an abortion by any measure, and I'm not convinced it could be done properly, even with the source. Software advances, and developers are under no obligation to perpetually issue upgrades. MS isn't a charity, and they don't make money by giving away software. It would be great if they just patched Win3.1 to Win7 since I bought it with my first IBM computer, but they didn't, so I had to upgrade on my dime. I don't mind, and that's exactly what I expect.

i can imagine myself having a winXP system with a backup to flash with an SP3 image with the latest updates, if anything crashes.

then i'll have another system with a vista/7/8 boot to run more recent stuff.

In what nightmarish alternate universe would having an XP system in the future be a good thing?

It'd be nice for Win 8 to have native BD playback but it's not very likely to happen.

Only if they once again offer a more expensive SKU like Win7 Ultimate that passes the licensing cost onto you.
