when i was in california i saw cars with no plates EVERYWHERE. i was told it was to facilitate walking up to a dealership and driving away, and owners have up to 30 days to register.

Yep. Growing up here I thought it was normal. Normal would be paper plates (with plate numbers instead of the dealer ad) until the real plates are mailed within days.
Here the norm is 30 days to even register it (not counting the loophole).

The article quoted an obscure loophole in California law stating that an individual has up to six months to register a vehicle.

Actually the portion of the article you quote, TFA, and even the original interview the article refers to all reference, the plates, not the registration.

In fact, the original article even implies that the cars were registered.

Steve (or someone close to him) spotted a loophole in the California vehicle laws. Anyone with a brand new car had a maximum of six months to affix the issued number plate to the vehicle.

So Jobs made an arrangement with the leasing company; he would always change cars during the sixth month of the lease, exchanging one silver Mercedes SL55 AMG for another identical one. At no time would he ever be in a car as old as six months; and thus there was no legal requirement to have the number plates fitted.

Unless you have a link to the statute allowing six months for a person to register a vehicle (which, frankly, would shock me), I have to conclude that you are talking out of your ass here. :|

Who cares?

He used a loophole that was disadvantageous to himself financially so that he didn't have to get license plates that he didn't want. Gaming the system, sure. But really, is this what you are going to get upset about? REALLY?

And people say Apple fanboys are delusional/irrational/etc...

Jobs seems to stir some pretty viceral emotions in some people. After he died someone on my facebook actually suggested that him suffering with cancer and dying was karma for what happpened with his daughter in the 70's. Good god.

I knew a guy that would just buy new underwear instead of washing it.

true story.

In the 70s when my dad was a bachelor he would buy used clothes at the thrift store instead of washing his. Then occasionally he would take several garbage bags of dirty, ill-fitting clothes down to the laundromat and wash them all.

I can understand why people don't like hippies.

He was just a guy like anyone else. with his own flaws...etc. its really weird to expect him or anyone to be perfect in any kind of fashion you deem ideal. in fact its pretty stupid actually. i don't give a crap if he didn't have plates or if he stole your car stereo last year, the point of it all is that he made out to be a good CEO to put a company like Apple where its at now. anyone who does that is a damn good CEO. wtf is wrong with your brains?

the directors' obligation is to make as much money for stockholders as possible, otherwise they get the boot in a hurry. besides, i doubt it would be possible to manufacture many of today's consumer goods in america at all.

LOL out of all of the things Jobs did, you define him with his license plate preferences? WTF?

No, but constantly parking in handicapped spots long before he had cancer helps to define him as a pretty shitty person in my book.

Couldn't he have just rented an apartment for $800/month... let some crack heads live there and use that address for car registration? then when snooping reporters would track down the plates they would be like wtf?

I might've missed it, but why didn't anyone make a point about this:
It was common knowledge that Jobs would park his Mercedes SL55 AMG in a handicapped spot at Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters

It would be possible but not economically smart, in China your paying crap for wages, no matching SSI contributions, no unemployment compensation contributions, no workers comp insurance or lawsuits, no paid time off, no health insurance, ect..

Maybe b/c you didn't bold this:

And how exactly does that change anything? That just makes him look like an even bigger asshole because he had the power to get a reserves space made instead of using a handicapped spot. From what I read somewhere else (can't find the article I saw before the Yahoo one) he parked in handicap spaces other places too.

much lulz were had...

dude had balls....

as for loophole...its not like he was saving money swapping cars every six months, but well why the f**K not. its not like he was living lavishly in other areas, if you look at the 60 minutes piece he decided to live in a normal house in a normal neighborhood instead of living behind walls and a crazy rich mans mansion because he didn't want to become a rich weirdo..or his kids. so really that one thing about his car is not that big a deal.
