if you want good taste sardine cann make sure to buy them at asian markets.

sardine in america market carries the one made in morroco and it taste nasty..... like rotten fish and smells bad. wonder if morroco coast is populuted? making fish taste nasty.

I usually buy this for about $0.69/can at the local Asian Store nearby. :awe:
Once in a while I try the local Polish sardine or whatever I find in oil or tomato sauce, rarely in water. Salmon, Tilapia and Mackerel would be other fish I eat canned or whatever you find in the groceries.

Sardines, kippers, anchovies, all awesome, on crackers, on crusty bread, or quite frequently just out of the can.

I usually don't, because the Asian-sourced ones are the most commonly available. Better quality European sourced herring seems to be easier to find than good sardines, at least where I am.

Feeling old: I remember when they did it in the U.S., and damn they were good. Actually, I got some of the last ones from a cannery up in Maine just a few years ago, only to find it had just closed down, when I went to try to get more 🙁.

With either one, though, I'll eat them right out of the can if smoked, in a mustard sauce, or paprika sauce (Appel is the only one I know doing that one). Or, I'll make a small sour cream or cream cheese based pasta salad (as opposed to mayonnaise). To me, the fish taste, and sometimes powerful olive oil, from those packed in water or oil, can be a bit too much (uncanned ones never have this problem, but I don't spend that kind of money on them often 🙂).

So I ended up trying some when I got home from work yesterday. The can contained 3 sardines....they were missing heads and tails. I took a fork and some sesame crackers. I put half of a sardine on a cracker and ate it... It was in oil, but had a smoky flavor. Not bad at all, probably overcooked because of the canning process.....similar to the way tuna in a can is overcooked....but good nonetheless. I drank a nice cheap dry cab with the sardines and it went well, though I read good sardines are best with white wine...I just didn't feel like opening another bottle.

I ended up eating all three fish in the can. One of the sardines split in half and I was able to easily remove the bones from that one. The other two I ate because they were so soft from cooking and soaking in oil. I wouldn't mind the bones if I didn't see them, but because I saw them, I had to pull them out with the fork.

Overall, it was a good experience and I am going to go for can 2. (hot sauce) and can number 3. (kipping snacks) this weekend as hunger hits me.

The 3 fish in a can is the larger cheaper variety. Try the King Oscar double packed with smaller brisling sardines. You can find King Oscar in any store since it's owned by Bumblebee.

I prefer the non-smoked variety. Smoke ruins the fish taste, imo. And you want sardines with skin. Most of the Omega-3 is on the skin.

Smoked is my favorite style. I did get one brand that I can't remember the name of which overdid it. It also tasted more like synthetic smoke, and not real smoked fish.
