When I was a kid, my dad used to buy fish steaks (not sardines, but sold next to them). We would get them in hot sauce and eat them on crackers.

my dad did that with sardines and it was gross, about the only time i remember him eating that shit was while watching football on Sundays. bleah.

This thread inspired me to try 'em for the first time... picked up some smoked stuff in oil, not bad. A lot like tuna (duh). Funny when I was a kid I couldn't stand sea food but now I love the hell out of it.

your taste changes about every 10 years.

I ordered some Cento brand sardines (boneless /skinless) from Amazon in a 25 pack for $55. It was breakfast this morning. I bought them based on their reviews and am pleased with the quality. They have fewer bones than the Trader Joe's sardines and aren't smoked. They have a very mild flavor, which is nice compared to the cheaper brands I've tried. Cento sardines come from Morocco. I'm interested in finding some other canneries in the Mediterranean region to do some comparisons.

Btw.....my wife just loves that I'm eating sardines these days.
