So the PS3 has HDMI output...

All,

It been reported that the Sony PS/3 comes with dual HDMI (DVI-D + Audio + HDCP/DRM) interfaces. No other HDTV outputs have been mentioned. Although I am quite impressed, I am also quite upset.

Many first and second generation HDTV sets do not come with HDMI interfaces. Early generation sets (like mine) come with analog Component or VGA (RGBHV). Second generation sets come with DVI-D.

Although some DVI-D sets are compatible with HDMI (using a DVI-D to HDMI adapter) if they support DRM, others are not.

Simply put, DRM has struck again. When copyright holders win, we loose.

Unless an adapter is released, this consumer whore will be buying elsewhere.

I think that Sony is being stupid. How much would it cost them to put some component outputs on their device? Maybe $0.50. That's just bad business.

I imagine HDMI -> Whatever adaptors will be sold. Sony is not going to leave anybody hanging.

An HDMI to Component analog adapter? Link please.

EDIT:

Just because there are HDMI to DVI-D adapters does not mean that they'll work.

According to the HDCP spec, if the source device's material has its DRM bit enabled, the device on the receiving end must also support HDCP and pass that bit along. If the receiving device can't/won't pass along HDCP, the source device will not pass the signal.

I have yet to see a cheap DVI-D to Component transceiver. Even if such a device existed on the consumer level, they would run afoul of the HDCP license and would be banned from releasing such a device with HDCP compatibility.

I really don't see movie studios allowing HD movies to be carried via component. I can imagine games would be HD with component, though.

That won't work with DRM protected content though.

I don't see why you cant go from HDMI to DVI then DVI to component, you're using two adapters but hey it should work right. Unless like Viper said you're viewing DRM content.

same

fvck sony. im not buying another hi def tv just so i can play their ps3. revolution or xbox360 for me then.

seriously,im sick and tired of all these companies crapping on the customers. we should be allowed to use whatever we want. im sick of sony and it's attitude. espicalyl since they try ot maintain for the most part super strict DRM standards and use the mose proprietary devices in their devices.(memory stick?, whatever that connect store format only DAP?)

eidt: fixed. whoops put ps2 instead of ps3.

Well, they do have an AV Multiout on the back of the PS3. A component/composite adaptor will probably hook up there. Pic of PS3 rear

Odds are games will be HD via component. It's the movie studios that care about DRM and protections like that.

Agreed, I can't see games being DRM protected.

Movie studios aren't going to like their spiffy new HiDef DVD's getting transferred without protection though.

Not that I would ever use a playstation as a DVD player but there are those that would.

Remember that the PS3 is also a BluRay-DVD player. Given that Sony will be releasing high definition movies on BluRay, they'll want to make sure that they plug the analog gap. That may mean not supporting component analog output.

Please see my post above about the A/V Multiout port. It is more likely that they will have component and composite breakout boxes.

My Radeon/8500 has a similar issue. Macrovision encrypted DVDs can not be played over component displays (using ATI's HD adapter). That can be fixed simply by running the MPEG2 VOBs through DeCSS and then playing the output, but that's a pain to do with every movie.

I personally am really worried about my TV's long term future use. If BluRay and HD-DVD players are going to omit component output, how am I supposed to use my HDTV?

My guess is it'll play 1080i games out the AV Multiout (looks like the same port as PS1 and PS2) over component, just like PS2. 1080p will require the HDMI.

Edit: Mine has componenet, VGA, and Firewire.

This appears to be correct but release is a bit of a ways off so it's hard to say.

Games should be 1080i/720p or just 1080i, but Blu-Ray movies could be either, both, 480p downrezed over component, or not at all.
