Once you're high enough up you can pay people less than you make to know what firefox is. Such is the world of management :)

The head of my IT department still thinks that the whole computer is called a hard drive, and that the routers are modems.
Does he fear this new "electricity" thing as well?

I think our head of IS (our version of IT) would preffer us to use Token Ring because it's somehow safer. She's afraid of wireless.

The guy I'm talking about is afraid of wireless too.

But is he afraid of it due to security reasons or because he's afraid of new technology?

he should be afraid of wireless. its completely insecure and not reliable.

WEP out of the box maybe. But it is definitely possible to have a secure wireless lan.

But better no wireless than a halfassed secured one.

Not to mention traditional wired ethernet equipment is abundant, has well established standards and is signifigantly cheaper than newer wireless equipment.

What it comes right down to is: wireless will never be as secure as wired networks. And they'll probably never be as cheap, at least not anytime soon. And unless your organization has a real need for roaming users, I think its a waste of money myself.

no it is not. It can be jammed.

we have a hard enough time securing wired lans, let alone wireless.

LOL. Secure is pretty subjective. Nothing can be proven impossible to hack. It depends on whether you need to protect your data from some guy out for a challenge or the NSA.
My point was just that there are ways to make a wireless lan very very difficult to hack. Obviously it takes more than just setting up an out of the box system and enabling WEP, but it is possible.

Wireless is insecure by itself even with WEP or WPA. IMO right now the only way to secure wireless is with a VPN. Also, I know that the VPs/managers where I work are not the most technically minded. They are there for strategy, long term goals, and making sure everyone is working well with eachother to get the job done. It is the big picture that they are concerned with.

Yet, I totally understood why this guy was a VP and the other guy wasn't. The guy was totally intimidating, seemed to right away know what questions to ask and what to say. In the end, he'd be the one to make his company successful and not somebody who maybe knows 10x more but doesn't know how to apply that knowledge.

i love people like that.
my head boss is like that - and i love how confident he is. always asks the right questions and keeps you on your toes. great managing skills i think. and he definitely is intimidating at times.
