No. That's why they hire others to work for them.

The head of the IT department is usually a idiot. This is the same reason today, I have to do a NFS mount over the WAN on a productiopn system.

No, that's why they have a staff. The manager is supposed to cover high level strategy and decision making.

The head of my IT department still thinks that the whole computer is called a hard drive, and that the routers are modems.

Maybe I should clarify that our IT department is about 10 people, not some huge organization that needs tons of management.

minendo has it right... usually, at least at big companies, CIO's and IT department heads are not the most technical. Its not as toy4x4 states... that they are idiots... its just that they are not paid to be technical but instead to manage a department.

Again, this is why they have more technical people working for them... so they dont have to keep up with all of that stuff.

10 people is quite a bit imo. The company I work for as 400ish people, and 4 IT people (including network admin)

My department is about 15. I'd be willing to bet that neither my director or the CTO would know what Firefox was, but I wouldn't hold that against them. Although I do think that confusing a modem with a router is over the line. I would expect to be able to tell my boss that firefox is a mozilla-based web browser and not have to explain to him why it won't be an adequate replacement for Office.

Does he fear this new "electricity" thing as well?

I think our head of IS (our version of IT) would preffer us to use Token Ring because it's somehow safer. She's afraid of wireless.

The guy I'm talking about is afraid of wireless too.

My boss would have no idea what Firefox was... and who really cares? I wouldn't expect him to, to be honest.

She might not want to lose the Token Ring.

Dilbert immediately came to mind when I saw Token Ring....

But is he afraid of it due to security reasons or because he's afraid of new technology?

I had to tell my boss what FireFox was... but that wasn't long after FireFox was released. My IT department is four techs and one supervisor... the supervisor knows just enough to be dangerous. I do nearly all of the network management, and one coworker doesn't do much at all, and the other two do whatever odd jobs need to be done.

Man! If this is how the people really are out there managing IT departments, I'm gonna chew through my competition with no problem! Of course, I've worked my way up through almost every position at this point. Desktop support, server support, database admin, web server admin, Exchange server admin and network network security Manager. I hope to hold a CIO position somewhere at some point and I refuse not to be able to answer questions like, "Do you know what Firefox is?"

The "staff" are the facilitators, and those with govern the facilitators often couldn't care less by what methods. They really have no need, and often no interest, in keeping up with the latest tools used. How could they make their largely macroscopic (relative to you guys) changes based on social, political, and financial if they're daily concerns are within the minutiae of your own? Truman didn't know any more about nuclear fission in employing fat man and little boy any more than your IT leads know about Perl.

I know ours is afraid of it for security reasons, but only because she doesn't understand the technology. If you restrict access only to certain MAC addresses and enable 128-bit encryption it's going to be damn near impossible to break in. Besides, it's not like we have loads of sensitive information here.

Well, he was in my supervisor's office a few minutes ago espousing the virtues of NetMeeting, so it's not like he's completely detached from the software we're using.

Don't joke about Token Ring. My old work was chocked full of it still, even type 1. <shudder>

We started to have problems locating replacement equipment when a MAU or CAU would get burnt out or die.
