On second thought TF2 is prob more up your alley. It has a devoted player base and seems good for a romp. Get QW when it's cheaper :). When UT3 comes out...all other games will be neglected.

QW demo wasnt that good I thought. I have warhawk for the ps3 and thats a hell of a lot more fun. I havent played tf2 yet but I really dig the visual style. And I remember the classic TF being a ton of fun. So im basing it on that.

Unreal Tournament 3.

Seriously.

Of course, my decision is easy to make since TF2 and Quake Wars are blocked from working at my college for some reason (just can't connect to servers) while unreal tournament 3 works just fine and without lag (a rarity for my college's internet). Also a big ut fan. Quake Wars seems to nuanced to be fun, I don't think it will hold up to battlefield, and I can't even play team fortress 2 against bots so I have no idea how the gameplay is. I do know that the original team fortress has long since been surpassed, so if it plays similar, then tf2 won't be that interesting.

Still, just because tf2 is packed in with episode 2 and portal makes it a must buy for me, as it comes with two other games I wanted and doesn't cost anything more.

Paying $50 for a game I already have, something I may or may not like, Episode 2 (which is probably good), and a little puzzle game isn't really what I want to do with my money.

For what it's worth, that "little puzzle game" is amazing, better than episode 2. However, episode 2 and portal, while amazing, are a little on the short side. If they weren't so damn good, I'd have felt gipped out of the $50.

I didn't like either, but I'd take QW over TF2. TF2 maps are just too small overall, coupled with what seems like 70 degree FOV it feels horrible on my widescreen monitor. Plus certain player combos such as heavy+med or pyro+med are just too powerful, engi turrets kill from literally a single shot, spy class could have been an awesome feature, but his slow speed makes one backstab kill almost completely useless. There is also no skill involved as in guns are too inaccurate for a headshot. There is no skill in QW either, as the bullet spread is too big, but at least it's not confined to such small maps. The game is still objective based as in you could win a map in TF2 with all players playing heavy but you couldn't do the same in QW, in QW you really need different classes to complete objective.

I still prefer RtCW:ET over both QW and TF2

It may be hyped but I think it's warranted. I never played the original TF but TF2 is taking up most of my gaming time ... it's pure fun, which a lot of games are missing nowadays.

Ok, this is from 1 week of playing TF2 like a crack-addict: look into Quake Wars.

While TF2 is pure fun, it just isn't the same as TFC in terms of "skill". People use to "specialize" in classes, but it appears that they've dumbed it down considerably. Now every class is as easy as the next and the learning curve is about one round (20/30 minutes) per class. Also, you get random critical hits, out of nowhere 1 hit kills and spam spam spam. I felt kinda sad setting a new personal record with 32 kills on one life with Dustbowl. In no way am I saying it's not fun, it's just that it isn't as good as it use to be.

I personally like Quake Wars more, but they're both fun to play... I guess it just depends on your style of play.

I think they're selling a standalone version now for only $20. Definitely a steal.

It depends on whether you want to play a scifi game or a cartoony one. Come on, they are completely different except both are FPS.

Skip them both, TF2 is random, laughable, without balance, and easy. QW is almost entirely vehicle based which makes the game a silly race to see who can get the the flier first since their range is infinite.

... and ask a friend for a TF2 guestpass (or PM someone from the TF2 guestpass thread) and try out the demo for Quake Wars (I believe there is one) and see which you like best. :)

As far as community, TF2 dwarfs ET: QW. Right now there are 1000 people playing ET: QW and 18,000 people playing TF:2.
ET: QW vs. TF: 2

I missed this thread the first time around. Might as well put my $0.02 in before it falls away..

QW is Awesome! It's well polished, the gameplay is fun and balanced and has obviously gone through massive playtesting. I am amazed by the *efficiency* of the graphics engine. It provides graphics on par with Crysis yet does so on peanuts for hardware.

QW has also gathered dust on my shelf ever since TF2 came out. :)

Never played QW so can't comment on that. TF2 is a very good game but I got bored with it because I think there's too much focus on teamplay and not enough on individual skill. When I used to play counterstrike, at least when playing on public servers, I was basically playing to be on top of the list, and I enjoyed the challenge of that. In TF2, you can play as a class like engineer or medic and get a high score without having much skill, even though you are contributing a lot to your team which is what the score reflects.
