Long time RtCW: Enemy Territory player here with zero Team Fortress Classic experience. I was 100% focused on getting QW:ET and only noticed TF2 because of the cool graphics and funny character videos.

I've tried the betas for both and am now completely enamored with TF2 and won't be buying QW:ET. It is the best game I've played in years, and I'll be playing it (along with CS:Source) as my main FPS game for a long, long time.

I was surprised at the T rating for QW. I just purchased the game but will play tonight. Impulse buy which I rarely do. I hope it doesnt suck bigtime.

Purchased QW this morning.
I just played offline to get a feel for the maps/objectives, then work came a callin'

I don't think I have played TF since it was a mod on Quake 1 (or was it Quake 2 I can't honestly remember)

UT3 for me.

I take it that TF2 is Team Fortress 2 for Half-Life 2?

Will Quake Wars be primarily online multiplayer or is it just an afterthought?

Shouldn't it depend on which type of game you feel like playing? The atmosphere is going to be completely different... one is cartoony and one is scifi. You're basically asking which is better, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, or I Am Legend, because they both star Will Smith.

Have tried both, though not spent very long on TF2.

TF2 has failed to really grab me. I am sure if I play it more it will grow on me, but think this will always be a quick fix game for me.

ET:QW I absolutely love. Once you start getting used to it, as it takes a while to get the hang of, its great fun! The only problem is if I go in, I want to play through a campaign, which is time consuming.

I think both will have their place. Just wish the numbers on the ET:QW UK servers would go up.

I love TF2 a lot more because it has a more polished presentation, in my opinion. The characters are interesting and each class is actually unique.

Other games have classes too, but they are all mostly the same with a little different gun. The difference in classes in TF2 are not just different guns, but specialty weapons and items that create team tactics and cohesive units.

I was personally let down by QW because ET was and is still really good and fun to play. But my style of gameplay I prefer is the CS quick style as opposed to the larger scale battles.

Quake Wars is BF2. The Demo is as far as I will take it. TF2? No thanks. Didn't care one iota for the original.

I think I'll wait until UT3 comes out then decide between that and ETQW. I always liked the large-scale Battlefield style more than the CS thing.

Well couple things here... #1 TF2 is only 28 bucks on steam. you dont need to buy the entire Orange box to get it...

#2 it has ZERO in common with CS except that it was based on the same engine.

TF is a far superior product to QW..
I played both extensively in thier betas

and Im a huge BF2/2142 player and QW is crap..
a Poorly done BF clone.

TF is fantastic well worth the 9 year wait..

Both fucked up in many ways.
TF2's gameplay is utterly retarded mainly thanks to these idiotically long respawn times, let alone the freakin' slow walkbacks - totally ruins the gameplay and it's a big loss for me because I was very excited ever since the first trailers... screw it, Valve, never gonna buy any of your utter boxed crap again. :(

ET:QW in reality has nothing to do with Quake. It bears something from ET - which I never liked - but at the same time it tries to imitate BF - which was utterly slow for me - and the attempt to create two distinctively different races ended up in baaaaadly unbalanced game. You don't really feel it in the demo but in the full game it's more than obvious; SD screwed it royally.
Besides this Splash Damage totally fucked up the vehicles - seriously: nobody from SD every played UT2k4? Check those vehicles: simple, stupid handlilng model BUT IT WORKS VERY WELL. This one SUCKS. BIG TIME in case of the CHOPPERS regardless of Advanced controls are enabled or disabled.
The red triangles above the enemies' heads ARE RIDICULOUS - the person who figured this will be good is obviously utterly and pathetically clueless about online FPS gaming. What kind of retarded things is this? KILLS THE WHOLE GAME.
These are the biggest idiocies in QW but of course, there are other meaningless stupidities like completely unnecessary long waiting before respawn, the rather dull graphics - imagine it a year or 2 years from now: it's going to look butt-ugly! Look at Ut2k4 today... Crysis MP beta kinda sucks too but at least it has decent graphics options - QW is just dull, thanks to id's fucked-up D3 engine though SD deserves a kudos making possible big, open areas instead of the shitty Doom 3's boring and craptastic corridor shootings.
</RANT>

So after all if you REALLY wan to pick from these two go with TF2 - for me it's a total crapshoot, a fuckin' annoying crap gameplay, I stopped playing it after 3-4 hours total and I'm still playing QW - just got my game tag fixed by Activison - but most of the people will be much better off with TF2 - it's at least funny, has a avery distinctive style and characters are great, teams are balanced etc.
If Valve decides to fix all these retarded problems in TF2 then I might give another chance - however I can already see the possibility of putting ET:QW up on eBay or giving it to somebody else very soon... only the date is in question...

PS: did anyone else notice that as far as engines go this round now obviously went to Epic's UE3? :) Besides QW I cannot recall ANY tech4 -based (D3-engine) game but QW is id's own game, outsourced to SD (heck, it seems by now id recognized they suck at games as they never been able to make anything beyond mediocre since Doom but that, being a first of its kind, was rather an exception.)
On the contrary UE3 is all over the place: Bioshock, Fury (played the beta), Frontlines (playing the beta), MoH: Airborne, BIA: Hells' Highway (coming), next America's Army (v3.0, next year?) etc just to pick some besides the Epic's own Gears of War and UT3 (both coming before Christmas) and and two dozen or so console games in development. I can see why Carmack was already pushing tech5 at last WWDC... :p

PS2: UT3 demo is downloading now... fingers are crossed... this year only brought disappointments so far (sans Bioshock, it's great!), UT3 is my last hope...

The idiotically long spawn times are due to a bad server admin not setting them shorter, try to find a better server.

The freakin' slow walkbacks are caused by idiotic Engineer teammates not building teleporters, that's what they're for and I've found if you bitch enough at them, they'll eventually build them..

Took the words out of my mouth. Was a long time RTCW and ET player, but I just didnt like quake wars no matter how much I tried. My old clanmates are loving it, though.

This man speaketh teh trutheth! It's amazing how often I have to say 'um, it would be great if an Engineer could build a teleporter'. I even had to say it the other day on a team that had 4 Engineers!!

I can't vouch for TF2 .. but I will say QW has been very fun. Once you get over the brief learning curve (abt 4 or so hours) it''s a blast. Nothing like battlefield IMO b/c u do more than shoot. I wish there were more maps though :)

You do a lot more than shoot in BF. I'm usually in the top half or 3rd even when I have very few kills

Compared to QW, BF2 is "walk around and shoot at people". For the campaign mode (90% of the servers) there are objectives to defend/complete/destroy such as building a mining laser (objective) to blow a hole through the side of a fortified complex so you can infiltrate it and destroy the objective inside. It's the same zerg rush as BF2, but in QW it's attacker vs defender that hardly every stays the same throughout the match.

There is also a great deal of options on how to play, such as feeling like you want to play as a sniper with or without the sniper riffle and deploy 1 of 3 types of artillery you can direct. The downside is that things are rather "jerky" where everyone moves around fast and the vechiles jump around a lot as you drive. Both games are good and have something to offer.

I bought Quake Wars a week ago, and it was awesome. I bought TF2 a few days ago, and I haven't played Quake Wars since that time.

Get TF2

UT3?

I didn't really like QW for the hour i tried playing it; i can see the learning curve is steep, & it's not my style.

TF2 seems fun for the little i played of it, but it's competing for my time with UT3 beta, & losing bigtime :p

I wish I could play a demo of TF2, or a trial, or something. I don't want to spend $30 on something I may or may not like, then go buy UT3 or ET:QW. Dystopia has amazing objective-based gameplay and very well-balanced classes. I suppose I'll just keep playing that for now. :)
