Race relations isn't something advantageous for american conservatives to bring up. To wit:
The party never left Reagan nor vice versa, given he surely approved of the party's Willie Horton ad & such despite proclamations that some of their best friends are black. In generally the message that conservatism is minority-friendly is meant for an audience of your peers to tell themselves they're not racist despite forming around a platform to oppose civil rights.
Speaking of sheep, american conservatism advocates for the interests of the gentry, and it's somewhat in their interest that uneducated whites get a class of minorities with lower social status underneath them. Not really any different than back in the day. Whether that's worth giving up collective bargaining & such is doubtful, but their constituents do love hating on anyone said to be too uppity.
Reminds me of something Lyndon Johnson once said-
If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."
Some things apparently never change.
