I'm talking about water out of the tap and then just throwing some ice in there. Is that a lot healthier than drinking cokes(I drink like 2-3 a day, can get up to like 5-6)? Will doing that alone help me lose weight?
 
If you're drinking 12oz Cokes you will be cutting out 420 calories a day and 2940 a week - nearly equivalent to a pound of fat (~3500 calories)! So yes, I would say it is a good first step in losing weight. Of course, you still have to consider the rest of your diet and physical activity levels.

Yes, drinking water versus soda is immeasurably healthier. As the first two posters said, it will shave thousands of calories out of your diet. Drinking water will also eliminate a huge amount of HFCS and other shit that's in Coke.

It's one of the best first steps you can take. You'll probably get caffeine and sugar withdrawals at first, but after a week or two they will subside. Pick up some 100% fruit juice, such as apple juice, orange juice, and grape juice, to have on hand when you want something sweet. If you're really addicted to soda, then carry around some sweet fruit juice in a spill-proof container. I came across this one the other day:

That way, every time that "soda" bell goes off in your head, you can replace it with something sweet but far, far better for you. Drink water most of the time though!
 
I lost 30 pounds that way without ever working out. The free pop machines at work are both a benefit and a curse.
 
As others have said, replacing many liquids in their diet (not just sodas) with water will have a positive effect and is a great first step.
 
Yes, this is a very healthy switch to make. You don't have to go cold turkey on the soda either, you can start by alternating between the two: always finish at least a pint of water in between each soda. Then try to get down to 1 soda a day.

For a good supply of cold drinking water at home, get a Pur brand water tank for your fridge. It holds about 9 pints, the filters last much longer than they say, and it's a tenth of the cost of bottled water (or less).

I get a six-pack of store brand water bottles and refill them from the tank, using each bottle for a couple of weeks before recycling it.

3 cokes a day are too many, it's about a litre of coke or more.
Fruit juice is more healty than coke of course, but you don't have to drink to much of it as well.
Water is definitely the best choice
 
I have switched to strictly ice water for the weekdays, and I reward myself with a Coke or two on the weekends. I am sure that it has made a difference.
 
Ignoring potential aspartame side effects, what's the difference between replacing regular pop with diet pop versus water when it comes to losing weight? You still lose those calories.

Well, you avoid the calories, but soda in general will still tear your body up - they decrease the pH of your digestive system quite a bit. That's not good at all and can cause significant digestive problems.

I drink only diet coke...sometimes up to 12 a day. However; zero calories or not it bloats me making me get a beer gut.

If I cut out diet coke within a couple weeks it looks like I dropped 10lbs or more.

What I do now is for every diet coke I drink about 64 ounces of water (maybe it's more it's a big jug)....

I drink a lot
 
I suggest that you try the following:

Seltzer
Flavored seltzer
Crystal light

Water is best but any of the above will do as an intermediate. For what it's worth, there is a small school of thought that suggests that diet sodas "fool" the body into expecting calories, and when it doesn't get any, it compensates by causing others to eat more. But this is far from proven and is still VERY controversial - particularly because there are dozens of people out there who have lost weight switching to diet.
 
I love water with all my heart, since I try to be physically active all day long with pushups, situps, bike riding, yard work, fixing things, you name it. Water plays an integral role in helping my body convert food and energy into muscle.

I drink sodas about once or twice a week since they are empty calories and just make me jumpy for a bit. Yes they taste great and hit the spot when you are driving around with a big gulp. Otherwise I stick to water based drinks like tea, coffee, juice, etc.

My body requires water, and Im the healthiest Ive ever been in my life since I cut back on drinking soda and drink water like there is no tomorrow.

I switched from Coke to Coke Zero mainly because I like the taste of Coke Zero better. But also it has zero calories. I usually have one a day. The rest of the time it's Crystal Light or Gatorade or coffee. Not much plain water though.
 
Did it when I entered college and lost a good 10-15 pounds really quick (was also working out at the time, but that def. sped up the process)

I used to be a hardcore soda drinker, pretty much stopped cold turkey. Now one sip would make my stomach hurt. It's so bitter.

Just drink water 🙂
 
I've been drinking diet soda for about three years now went from 215 to now 130 pounds. That said water is probably the healthier choice, but diet soda isn't as bad as people try to say it is.
