You're an ass.
This kind of behavior would be overreaction if you drove a brand new $60,000 car. Finding the person and confronting her is one thing, calling the police because someone dinged your door in a parking lot is completely and totally absurd. Now if she had actually HIT your car with hers, that would be a different story - but all this because she opened her car door into yours?!?
I can't wait for the next message from you which will say something like "So I was sleeping last night, and I heard this noise, and I walk outside and my windshield was smashed in with a brick.. I know that girl had to have done it, but I called the police and they said there's nothing I can do because I can't prove it was her."
That is what we call poetic justice.

If there's paint on her door (which is quite possible if she hit it hard enough to make a ding) then it should make it easy to implicate her. However, if there's not then it'll be pretty tough. Hopefully the cop's tactic will scare her enough.Originally posted by: BooGiMaN
how are u gonna prove she did it..i mean u assume she did but didnt actually see her....u state in ur post that she sped off quickly and u assumed she dinged it.... maybe she just broke up with her bf or somethign so she slammed the door shut and sped off...
I dont know if id have called the police without proof or without actually having seen her open the door and bounce off your car...unless ur lookign at ur car 24/7 while u eat which is kinda weird....
how big is the dent or is it a ding..you got any pictures...
im just curious..i am not saying ur wrong and all

No, poetic justice (for me, at least) would be reading a post from you tomorrow saying, "OMG, NO! Someone backed into me in the Kroger parking lot and didn't leave a note or anything! I'm screwed!"Originally posted by: flot

Oh c'mon. My car must have 10-15 door dings in it. I'm sure people have bashed into it while parallel parking, run shopping carts into it, etc. I even have a nice scrape where someone ran into my bumper in a parking lot. You know what? This is life. Not one of those people ever stuck around, and honestly I wouldn't expect them to - except the person who actually hit and scraped my bumper, I do wish they had the balls to at least leave an apologetic note.
I'm SURE that sometime in the last 20 years I've opened a car door and digned someone else's without noticing. It's not like the chick rammed her car into yours - she hit it with her door. What's the actual damage to your car? $20? $30? $40?
Hardly seems like something I'd be calling the police over, and certainly would freak out if someone did the same to me. Oh, and I don't believe for a second that even a third of the people here who claim they would, would actually stick around for more than 3 minutes if they accidentally dinged someone's door in a parking lot.

You just said that whatever the damage was, it wasn't so bad that any of her paint scraped off.
But I can only assume by this comment the "ding" scraped the paint off YOUR door? What's the actual damage?
Ever hear of Dent Wizard? $39 and they'll make the dent disappear, if there's no paint damage. And of my 15 door dings, I'd say only 1 or two did any actual paint scarring. What couldn't be fixed with a little rubbing/polishing compound, I certainly wouldn't risk fixing via repainting a big portion of the door.
You have a 2000 Grand Am and you already have a personal body shop guy? How much bodywork have you already had done to the car?!? And your first choice to repair a door ding would be to bondo and repaint?!? Is it a ding, or is it a 6" gash in the door?!?
Some people care more about their cars than you. Personally I can't say I'd be pissed enough to call the cops if I got a door ding. But if I saw the person do it and drive off, and I had their license plate, you can bet I'd get the cops involved. That's just wrong.Originally posted by: flot

From what you said about sanding priming and painting, I'd have expected you to be more pissed about the hail dents. If that happened to my car, I have no doubt I'd take my insurance check (and whatever additional money was needed) to another paint shop to get it restored. Either way though, this guy is totally in the right, and there's nothing illegal, immoral, or unjustifed about what he did. I give him a .Originally posted by: flot

Believe it or not, I once spent over 200 hours sanding, fiberglassing, and priming a car I owned. Saved up $$$ and went to 10 shops before finding one I wanted to paint it. Came out of the paint booth looking absolutely amazing. 3 years later I wake up and find a hundred hail dents in it. It happens, nothing you can do about it. I spent a week putting an entire A/C system into my Jeep, just because I don't trust anybody else working on it. Last month I even got quoted in Sport Compact Car as a research source for one of their articles. But you know what? Some things are out of your control, and if you DRIVE a car and you PARK it in parking lots - it's gonna take some abuse.

I've got a buddy with a $60k benz. He is also a bit too anal about his car, (nice car, but hey it's just a car) and yes also throws fits when he comes out into a parking lot and finds a new dent. (I don't cut him too much slack about it, either) He's had 4 or 5 pretty serious door dings taken out by the dealer, they go in through the window channel with a long prybar and massage the metal back into shape. At the mercedes dealer I think they charged $50 a dent or something like that.
You literally can't tell the dents were ever there. Ask around for recommendations of a compentant paintless ding guy in your area and I suspect you'll have similar results.
