So I'm eating at Wendy's with a friend, in clear view of where my car is parked. Now, I'm always nervous parking next to ANYONE, as my car has not one dent in it. So while I'm eating, I notice this girl getting into her car, and then slam her door shut really quick, go in reverse, slam it in drive, and really hammer it out of the lot. I look at my friend and say, "I bet you anything that she did something to my car." So having said that, I grabbed her plate numbers quick as shes speeding away, went out there, and sure enough there is a nice new door ding right on the side/door she would have hit with hers. I know it wasn't there before, because of the way I baby the car. At this time I'm pissed. I write down her plate, make/model, and time of the incident. As soon as I got home, I called the police and got my options, and since they wouldn't give me her phone number, I could either file and insurance claim or file a hit and run... so I filed the hit and run. I guess we'll have to see what comes of it.

And for those of you who think this is being really anal: well, it is.. but it's not only the door ding, its the fact that someone would take off after hitting someone's car.. door ding or something major.

UPDATE: Officer just called... really nice guy and I chatted with him. He agreed that its not so much the dent, but the fact someone would take off after doing this. He just told me he's paying a visit to her house (which happens to be close to mine). I didn't get and address or anything, just a general location. I'll let you know what happens of this.

Unless you keep your car in a garage and only move it around on a trailer, you're gonig to have to deal with door dings and scratches in the paint. It's a sad fact of life for daily driven vehicles.

I had the same thing happen to me a short while back, except I was rear-ended. No major damage, but the police dept. said if I filed a hit and run, it's filed at the state level, meaning that insurance gets a copy, and my inusrance goes up. I don't know if it's the same for you, but I would check.

Maybe she dinged your car BECAUSE she was in a hurry and careless (not the other way around)? What she did was still wrong--it'll be interesting to see how your claim turns out.

I chased down a van once when I saw the passenger ding my car. Walked up to the passenger and told her off. Fortunately, it was a nice family inside and no one shot me . . . (God--the stupid things I do when I'm mad . . . )

Maybe so, but why not catch someone that does it and drives away?

Nice job on filing the police report - hopefully the officer will scare her into giving you a check for repairs. Good luck!

You're an ass.

This kind of behavior would be overreaction if you drove a brand new $60,000 car. Finding the person and confronting her is one thing, calling the police because someone dinged your door in a parking lot is completely and totally absurd. Now if she had actually HIT your car with hers, that would be a different story - but all this because she opened her car door into yours?!?

I can't wait for the next message from you which will say something like "So I was sleeping last night, and I heard this noise, and I walk outside and my windshield was smashed in with a brick.. I know that girl had to have done it, but I called the police and they said there's nothing I can do because I can't prove it was her."

That is what we call poetic justice.

No, poetic justice (for me, at least) would be reading a post from you tomorrow saying, "OMG, NO! Someone backed into me in the Kroger parking lot and didn't leave a note or anything! I'm screwed!"

:p All in good fun.

I tried to just get her phone number, some means of contact, or anything. I did what was reccommended to me by the police office... why should I pay for something that someone else does? I know if I slammed my door into someone else's I would wait or leave a note for them. I'm not a complete ass like yourself.

edit: It's not like I'm pressing charges or anything.. I explained to the officer I just want to be compensated, and not even get the insurance involved if I don't have to.

I agree. I think you did the right thing, and the only thing allowable considering the circumstances.

Cfour for Elite!

I purchased a 2001 Honda Accord new and it has numerous dings in it from incosiderate assholes. None of them ever apologized of acknowledged any wrong doing.

One of them even danged the passenger side door while my wife was sitting there taking a nap. Hard enough to wake her up and she just got in her car and drove away.

If I was the police officer I would take you woith me when I went to her house. Probably put her in cuffs and put her in the back seat just to scare the sh!t out of her.

Well, let's not go that far...that's illegality on the officer's part! :)
