its been really really hot these past few days. so much so my family (me, my mom, and my dad) sleep downstairs to avoid the heat. Its always a lot hotter upstairs than downstairs. We sleep in the living room.

Last night, i believe it was around 4:30am (i sleep next to my cellphone) i woke up to some very soft rustling. I am a very light sleeper btw, so i was able to hear this. I stayed still and kept on listening to make sure it wasnt just my parents going upstairs, to the bathroom, or anything of the sort. The rustling was coming from the kitchen area of my house--which is adjacent to the living room, except seperated by a wall.

I kept on making sure i wasnt imagining things as I smelled methane gas and i kept on hearing a "sh" sound like someone was saying "sh!t" or something. So i got kind of nervous and suspicious. I proceed to the wall between the kitchen and living room where i was sleeping very quietly and waited.

It was very obvious that the sound WAS coming from inside the kitchen, though when i peeked around the corner i couldnt see anything (it was dark). I waited and listened--i knew it definately wasnt my imagination, i could hear rustling and definately smell the methane-gas smell.

So i flipped on the kitchen light quickly and looked in the kitchen, but there was nothing there. The smell also quickly vanished. I checked in the garage and walked about the house for about 45 min. to make sure there wasnt a gas leak or anything. I also went outside to see if there was any suspicious activity--there was none. So i went back to sleep, after lying alert for some 30 minutes.

Fast forward to this morning. My parents discovered that the screen on the kitchen window had been completely bent and removed and tossed on the ground in front of my house. Some of the solar lamps that line the path to my front door and near my kitchen window had been kicked and broken (i suspect to render the area dark). The sound i heard was the blinds for the window being shuffled.

It was pretty scary to realize i came that close to encountering the criminals. Im going to get my parents to get a gun. I could definitely use one (at least feel a lot safer) the next time they rob my home. Or a dog, a big dog could maul him. People are going to rag on me for leaving the window open (seeing as this is ATOT and you deserved anything that happens to you), but it was scorching hot, and itd be quite unbearable with the windows closed. had i not woken up.....:(

BTW what does the law say in regards to shooting an intruding burglar?

Cliffs:

-Days have been hot, so I slept downstairs where its cool
-Woke up in middle of the night to rustling sound and strange smell (methane gas) in kitchen area
-Made sure it wasn't ordinary stuff like family/animals/neigborhood/etc.
-Got up and listened--sound grew louder as I hid near the kitchen
-Turned on the light and sound+smell disappeared quickly
-Made sure it wasnt gas leak
-Walked around house for 45 min and could find nothing
-Woke up to discover that the window in kitchen (which had been open during the night) had its screen taken off and tossed aside and bent and the solar lamps leading up the my front door had all been kicked and broken.
-Vow to buy a gun/dog/alarm system/something

That's interesting, weird, and scary at the same time.

Glad you're a light sleeper.

walking outside the house, alone in the night and that too for 45 minutes was a stupid thing to do IMHO.

FirstlY I would have called 911 and then I would have ventured out with a baseball bat.

You need to be more careful / sensible.

So in summary: if criminals bathed, and didn't smell like rotten eggs, they'd be less likely to be caught? :p

Seriously though, scary ******. :Q

If you do get a gun (which I have no problem with) make sure that the people in the house are adequately trained with the weapon. Research it thoroughly. Whether it's a shotgun or handgun, you want to be proficient with its use and be willing to take the life of another if necessary.

A dog would also be a great idea, especially since you're such a light sleep and its barking wouldve woken you up immediately and more than likely driven off the burglars.

If you walked about the house for 45 minutes, how did you not notice bent and broken windows?

whoops. sorry i was unclear. I walked about my house for 45 minutes, but went outside only momentarily to see if anything was in the immediate vicinity of my home.

Its funny, i actually looked DIRECTLY out the window with the screen removed. In fact, i saw the screen leaning against the fence. It didnt occur to me at the time that it was a screen and that the screen was removed. I was quite nervous and only carefully peeked out the blinds. Again, it was really dark, so i couldnt tell it was the screen, i thought it was just some rubble the neighbors were throwing out.

get a baseball bat, a german shepherd, and a nice handgun/shotgun (why not both?) and you're probably set.

I would definitely feel reluctant getting a gun, with all the issues it presents. A dog would be great though. Its active alertness would be a great alarm system.

Only thing bad you did was turn the light on. It could have given them a clear view of you and you still couldn't have seen them.

has any of your neighbours spotted anything? did you atleast get in touch with the police and inform them about what happened?

They may suggest a useful thing or two.

Take care.

I dont know, maybe if someone who knows this can clarify. I know methane gas itself is undectable and quite deadly. perhaps in small quantities it is sedative, yet not lethal? Perhaps it was to keep us asleep...

As far as i Know, nothing. Most likely because I turned on the lights before they even got inside.

There has been a history of robberies and breakins in my immediate neighborhood...:( my neighbor moved out several years ago because he had an expensive bike stolen... in the middle of the day!

Its really freaky when I consider how close I was to that. I simply had to look to the window, rather than the middle of the kitchen to see them. Of course, the window was covered partially by blinds...but still.
